Travis Knight explains how he brought Masters of the Universe out of development limbo.

Director Travis Knight recently gave an interview to DiscussingFilm, discussing the completion of the lengthy development process of Masters of the Universe.

Knight acknowledged the complex history of this object's creation, while explaining his personal connection to the material. He stated, "It's one of those objects that has been dogged by failure for decades, and it was important to me that everyone involved in the project truly understood the material and had a genuine love for it, which is exactly what I do.".

The film was in development for over 15 years at various studios before reaching theaters. Sony Pictures Entertainment first acquired the rights in September 2009, and the project went through numerous directors and screenwriters. Netflix briefly held the rights before canceling the project in July 2023, having spent $30 million on development.

Amazon MGM Studios then stepped in, and Knight was officially cast as director in May 2024. Knight replaced the Nee brothers, who had been attached to direct since April 2018. Nicholas Galitzine plays Prince Adam, and the film also stars Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, Alison Brie, and Idris Elba.

Knight emphasized that sincerity defined his approach to the material, despite its inherently over-the-top eccentricity. He explained, "We live in an era of detachment, irony, a kind of detached judgment, and I don't approach any of my work that way." He added that he spent two and a half years of his life making the film.

The director also noted that the film skillfully blends various tones while remaining sincere and committed to its emotions. Knight said, "Despite some of the absurdity, irreverence, and irreverence, at the core of it all is our genuine belief in this world, and we took it very, very seriously, even though the film itself is very funny." Principal photography took place in London from January to June 2025.

The film will premiere in the United States on June 5, 2026, on the Amazon MGM Studios platform.
