Is it too early to declare 2026 the "Year of Film Adaptations"? Judging by how the film adaptation landscape is shaping up this year, it might not be an exaggeration.
The year began with a resounding success: Emily Henry's film "People We Met on Vacation" was released to great fanfare on Netflix in early January. It's only natural that this year's success will be reinforced by new, beloved stories.
The long-awaited fourth season of Bridgerton premiered in late January and February, following the lush, fairytale love story of Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and Sophie Beck (Yerin Ha).
February also saw the premiere of a new, albeit controversial, film adaptation of Emily Brontë's classic book, Wuthering Heights, starring teen idol Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie.

While romance plots typically dominate film adaptations of books, Andy Weir's sci-fi novel "The Ave Maria Project," starring Ryan Gosling, topped the box office when it was released worldwide in March.
Last month, all eyes were on Off Campus, a stylish hockey romantic comedy based on Elle Kennedy's book universe that follows the loves, lives, and aspirations of students at the fictional Briar University. The series reached such incredible heights that filming for the second season began less than a month after the first premiered.
Additionally, the film adaptation of Carly Fortune's novel "Every Summer After" will be released on Prime Video on June 10th. Sadie Soverall, Matt Cornett, Aurora Perrineau, and Abigail Cowan will star.
In addition, Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey" will receive a grand film adaptation from Christopher Nolan, starring some of Hollywood's most renowned actors. The second half of the year will also see the release of a film adaptation of Suzanne Collins's novel "Sunrise on Harvest" and the film "Dune," based on the novel by Denis Villeneuve.
While many literary works have already achieved success on screen, many other projects are already in development.
Film adaptations are already underway for books by popular authors such as Ali Hazelwood (The Love Hypothesis), Lynn Painter (Fake Skating and Better Than the Movies), Claire Leslie Hall, and Lisa Jewell. Four more of Henry's books will also be adapted for the screen.
With so many projects already released and planned, it's perhaps time to call this year what it truly is: the "Year of Adaptations.".
