As we approach the middle of the year, the 2026 film calendar has already released a lot of good horror films, but few are as disturbing as "« Behind the scenes »" Kane Parsons. While the endless frontiers are certainly terrifying, so is the film's protagonist, Clark, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. In a conversation with the actor, CinemaBlend asked him one key question about the plot. WARNING: SPOILERS!
Why does Clark find solace in the back rooms? They're all yellow wallpaper and rooms that only lead to other rooms. And yet, he ultimately chooses to live there, along with who knows how many terrifying creatures. So, during our interview, I posed this question to Ejiofor. Here's what he said:
I think his journey behind the scenes is quite strange, and it really reflects his psychologically unstable nature, his position in life, and how there's an element of behind the scenes that makes me feel like it needs him, and he needs him, and it's kind of mysterious. But from a cinematic standpoint, I understand that when I watch the film.
We know Clark is going through a turbulent period in his life. After a breakup that left him homeless, he seeks therapy and secretly spends nights in his own furniture store. He's practically devastated when he discovers these storage rooms. Here's what else the actor told us:
It's hard to put into words, but I understand how they sort of fit together and understand each other, and that, in my opinion, is one of the great, interesting, and profound mysteries of the backstage and its connection to psychology and the psychology of the characters.
Unlike Clarke, his therapist, Mary, seems to have felt powerless to save her own mother as a child and perhaps believes she can at least somehow cope with her trauma by helping him. Otherwise, why would she pursue him through the creepy basement? Although Ejiofor told me he himself finds no solace in the basement, he understands his character's feelings, adding:
I understand how someone in the state they've gotten themselves into can identify with, and I sympathize with them. I can't describe their exact state, but I understand what they're in. I can connect the dots and understand why their mind is in such chaos.
As a viewer, I certainly share the wave of enthusiastic reviews about the film. «"Behind the Scenes »"I find something perfect in this film, especially with a character like Clark. While we expect most characters to be scared and turn away, the fact that he genuinely wants to stay is one of the reasons the film is so good.
Additional tension arises when we learn that Clark is ill and eager to explore what else lies within this seemingly endless space. Unfortunately, these hidden chambers ultimately prove to be Clark's undoing and, perhaps, his therapist's imprisonment forever.
