For 18 years, the website Global Firepower has been closely monitoring the armies of 145 countries. To determine which army is the strongest in the world, the website's experts use more than 50 criteria, ranging from funding to logistics and geography.
Moreover, as GF experts claim, thanks to their unique formula (and refusal to take nuclear weapons into account), the armies of even small states are capable of competing in combat readiness rankings with giants like Russia, India, and China.
The World's Top 10 Armies in 2025
10. Italy

PwrIndx: 0.1848
Experts believe the reason Italy is among the top ten most powerful armies in the world in 2023 is its large military budget – $37 billion. Events in Ukraine have accelerated military spending among NATO countries, including Italy. However, last December, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, in an interview with La Stampa, stated that there was no need to increase the country's military budget beyond 21 percent of GDP.
In terms of technology, Italy's results are average: 850 aircraft (13th place), 404 helicopters (9th place), 197 tanks (62nd place overall) and 313 ships (7th place).
9. France

PwrIndx: 0,1848
France doesn't have as many ships (23rd place, 126 units), aircraft (10th, 1004 units) and tanks (58th, 222 units) compared to other countries, but those it has are modern and very effective.
Mirage and Rafale aircraft, Tiger helicopters, LeClerc tanks and the only aircraft carrier after the United States with its own nuclear power plant – all of this forms part of the core forces of the French army.
France is also quite capable of providing itself with equipment and machinery, which, if necessary, would help to conduct protracted military operations.
8. Japan

PwrIndx: 0,1711
Although Japan's army numbers only 240,000 people, a fraction of the size of its dangerous neighbor, North Korea (an impressive 1.2 million troops), the Land of the Rising Sun makes up for the difference with state-of-the-art weaponry.
The Japanese have 1,451 special-purpose aircraft—more than most other militaries in the world—and a very impressive navy with 36 destroyers (third place after the United States and China). All this wealth is supported by substantial budgetary allocations (11th place, $39.6 billion).
7. Pakistan

PwrIndx: 0.1572
Tensions between India and Pakistan remain, making statistics especially critical—especially given that both countries possess nuclear weapons. Pakistan has a population of 242.9 million (fifth largest in the world). Currently, the Muslim nation's army numbers 654,000.
Pakistan ranks among the top ten in terms of air force (7th, with 1,413 units). Its tank force lags slightly behind (8th, with 3,742 units), but Pakistan, like its neighboring rival, has a relatively small number of ships (28th, with only 114).
6. South Korea

PwrIndx: 0,1505
Although this East Asian country is relatively small in size, it firmly ranks among the top ten in terms of armed forces, aircraft (5th place, 1,602 units), and tanks (2,331, 10th place). Its navy, however, is modest—157 ships, placing it 19th.
And all this with a relatively small budget ($42.1 billion, 10th in the world). But what can you do? South Korea has to flex its muscles in the constant rivalry with its northern sister, which is also trying to keep up, despite its weak economy.
5. England

PwrIndx: 0,1435
The British don't have as many aircraft (16th, 663), tanks (57th, 227), and naval vessels (38th, 73) as the other nations in the ranking, not to mention their military personnel. So why is the United Kingdom firmly positioned among the top ten?
This is all thanks to its impressive military budget (ranked 7th in the world, $50.2 billion), which rivals that of many larger countries. It's also due to the island's advantageous location, making it difficult to attack.
4. India

PwrIndx: 0,1025
India's high ranking is largely due to its huge population (1.4 billion) and, consequently, its large military force (1.4 million). India also ranks highly in aircraft and tanks (fourth and sixth place, respectively).
However, its navy is not as large as one might expect for a country bordering the Indian Ocean. In terms of the number of vessels, it is inferior to the much smaller Thailand (292 vessels compared to India's 295). This is said to be due to its high oil consumption and low production.
Interestingly, the Indian Border Force is the only one in the world that uses camels as a means of transportation.
3. China

PwrIndx: 0,0722
While the US has relied on its air force and Russia on its tank forces, China has turned its attention to the sea. China's navy has 730 combat units, ranking first in the survey. In this respect, it's not far behind its neighbors—Russia (598 units) and, surprisingly, North Korea (519 units, third place).
China also has the second-largest military budget, an impressive number of military aircraft (third place after the United States and Russia, with 3,284 units), and the PLA easily outstrips all other armies in the world in terms of the number of military personnel – 2 million people.
Although special forces and other cloak-and-dagger masters are not included in the Global Firepower ranking of the world's most powerful armies, China made a name for itself when, several years ago, Chinese soldiers took three of the four prizes in the annual international competition hosted by King Abdullah II in Jordan.
2. Russia

PwrIndx: 0,0714
As last year, Russia, together with its rival the United States, is at the top of the militaristic pyramid.
Russia's second place in the 2023 ranking of the world's most powerful armies is primarily due to its tank fleet (both heavy and light). The total tank strength of our country (12,566 units) is almost twice that of the next country on the list—and no, it's not the United States, but North Korea (6,645).
Russia lags slightly behind other countries in the number of seagoing vessels, and the availability of fuel for them is guaranteed by the fact that Russia is one of the world's largest oil producers. Russia ranks fifth in the world in terms of military personnel (830,000), but this number fluctuates constantly due to short-term conscription.
1. United States of America

PwrIndx: 0,0712
For several years in a row, the US Army has held the top spot in the rankings for combat effectiveness and military capability. But America isn't content to remain a heavily armed observer; it actively intervenes in the affairs of other countries and is always ready to test new weapons in action.
True, not all other countries are enthusiastic about this situation—in some countries (for example, Iran), US military forces are even listed as terrorist organizations. But the American war machine shows no signs of slowing down.
Maintaining the US military (1.3 million troops) is expensive, and the lives of soldiers are precious. Each soldier is insured for up to $500,000. However, America is willing to pay this price—it's no wonder its military spending far exceeds that of all other countries ($761 billion, compared to China's $230 billion and Russia's $82.6 billion).
American soldiers are recruited entirely on a voluntary basis, and enlistment is not limited to U.S. citizens. Even residents (citizens of other countries who permanently reside in the United States) can join the army. Importantly, military service facilitates the process of obtaining U.S. citizenship. Recruitment is open to ages 18 to 42.
But the American military isn't content with manpower alone. While Russia is a tank power, the United States is an air power. The total number of aircraft and helicopters across all branches of the armed forces is more than three times higher than Russia's (13,300 versus 4,182), not to mention other countries with the most powerful militaries.
World Army Ranking Table 2025-2026
The world's military rankings are based on the principle that the lower the PwrIndx index, the stronger the country. So far, no country has reached the maximum military power score of 0.0000.
