Star film "The Break"« Zach Cherry visited Deadline's studio at London's SXSW festival this week with director Jason James to discuss blending genres—romantic comedy, thriller, and noir. «"It's not like this all night"» , which premiered at the festival.

This is the 13th feature film from Canadian director James, whose eclectic filmography includes the quirky romantic comedy« This burning feeling »", and the psychological thriller "« Exile »" and the family Christmas film "« Decorating the House for Christmas» .
Movie «"All Night Wrong", The screenplay, written by his longtime collaborator Jason Filiatrault, combines elements of several of these genres.
«"I love romantic comedies. That's where I started. I always try to play with genre and turn it on its head. My very first film was a romantic comedy about the most unromantic thing possible. Then I made another romantic comedy about suicide and depression," James said. "It was really exciting for me to make a film that was somewhere between neo-noir and indie romantic comedy.".
James said he was drawn to Cherry for the role of Gary because of his work on the show. «"Heirs »" and Dylan George's role in in the film "Breakup"« .
«"I'm very interested in sensitive people. Placing a sensitive person in such a harsh, deceptive world was incredibly exciting for me," he said. "I wanted to make a film about an unusual couple. Maria Bakalova is simply an unpredictable person. She's brave and strong. Putting the two of them in such a situation was simply incredibly captivating.".
Cherry said he was also drawn to the film's blend of genres.
«I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects that cross genre boundaries, such as «"The Gap"» и «"Heirs »"...my first regular series was «"You"» , "It's a very dark take on the stalker story in a romantic setting, but it's also very funny," he said.
Cherry admitted she was a big fan of Bakalova even before joining her on set, and described the experience of working with her as "amazing.".
«"When it comes to her ability to combine different genres, I think she does it really well... her performances are always very realistic, but at the same time she's so bold and fearless that when it comes to comedy, she's willing to try anything. And it was really great for me to work with someone like that," he said.
The couple also spoke about the "grueling" filming in British Columbia's Columbia Valley region during the winter of 2024-2025.
«"Never make a movie that takes place in one evening, because then you're completely immersed in vampire life for six weeks to two months. So we shot every day from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. We changed the clocks," James said.
«"We filmed in a small town… in the mountains last winter. It was minus 10 degrees. We embraced the snow and the cold… it felt like a war, like a battle. It was tough, but that feeling of cold, isolation, small town, a kind of borderland—for me, that's where dark things happen, and that's where these characters found themselves.".
Following its premiere at SXSW in London this week, All Night Wrong plans to take part in festivals this summer.
Cherry will also soon be seen on the big screen in Zach Cregger's film «"Resident Evil"» , which will be shown as part of the Un Certain Regard program at the Cannes Film Festival , "Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma"« .
