Meens also shared information about a GoFundMe fundraising campaign set up by his wife, Leah.

«"We started this business with money Carey made from conferences and used a sewing machine I already had," Leah wrote in the campaign description. "I started sewing plush toys about a year ago, I don't even remember how long. We only recently became an LLC because we reached a certain amount in our business program, so we had to register with the state.".

Leah explained that the funds raised through GoFundMe "mostly go towards electricity, internet, and food," noting that she makes "about $20-$30 for each toy" she creates.

«"I understand I need to keep prices low so people can afford it," she said. "It's not the best way to make money; it's truly a labor of love. However, if I succeed and grow the business, perhaps it will become something great.".

Lia also clarified that in addition to the plush toy store, she has a "regular job" and that Meens still frequently attends fan conventions. "In the meantime, I'd really like to have food, lighting, and still be able to connect with everyone online and promote the store," she wrote. "Every little bit helps. Thank you so much!"«

She also noted that Meens is "considering the possibility of receiving disability benefits for his heart failure," but that process could "take another year or more.".

At the time of writing, the campaign had raised $15,400 of its $18,000 goal.

Leah previously shared the news on Mince's Facebook page, explaining that their lives were turned upside down by a car accident in January.

«"The airbags deployed and I was hit hard in the face, causing a concussion," she wrote, noting that during a visit to the emergency room, she was diagnosed with something that looked like cancer but wasn't.

«"I couldn't work because I had terrible pain in my head, back, neck, and whole body," she said. "I just couldn't concentrate and was constantly dizzy. I couldn't do my regular job, which requires eight hours of reading on a computer screen, understanding people and typing, and solving their problems. So for several months, I just went to doctors and sewed.".

Leah explained that their relationship is developing on a continuum of misfortunes. "Every time I think things are getting better, something else happens that makes everything impossible," she said. "Carey has heart failure and now he can't work as a dishwasher, so that's out of the question. He's trying to get disability benefits, but that might not happen. Meanwhile, I've gone back to work and continue sewing. But I'm so tired and can't sleep when I need to, so I just don't sleep.".

She added: "I'm so busy, I'm constantly working, and I'm about to lose everything anyway. I can't afford a car, I can't pay rent, I can't afford cat food, I can't even afford coffee. Forget about food, I don't even think about it.".
