James Gunn's new Wonder Woman post may have revealed a secret about the next two Supergirl films in the DC Universe. The DC Studios co-CEO shared an intriguing image on his Instagram story just days before the release of Millie Alcock's Supergirl, and many took it as a hint about where Kara Zor-El will go next. Gunn and his partner, Peter Safran, have been shaping the new DC Universe since taking over DC Studios in late 2022, and fans have learned to closely follow their posts, especially Gunn's, as they often contain important hints.
Apparently, the next two Supergirl films will be "Man of Tomorrow," a sequel to "Superman" scheduled for release on July 9, 2027, and the in-development "Wonder Woman" reboot. DC Studios has already confirmed that Kara will play a significant role in the 2027 film. The "Wonder Woman" connection is relatively new, stemming from a number of hints dropped over the past couple of weeks.
The first hints about a second film came from Lars Winter, executive producer of the TV series "Supergirl." Speaking at the film's premiere (as reported by THR), Winter made it clear that Kara's story doesn't end with "Man of Tomorrow," noting that «"She plays an important role"» in the next film:
«"We have the movie 'Man of Tomorrow,' and we already know what the next movie after that will be, and she will play a big role in it.".
Gunn's post appeared around the same time. On his Instagram story, the director shared an image of Wonder Woman with Zala Jor-El, a Kryptonian sent to the Amazon for foster care. The image promoted the upcoming comic book "The Dark Knight Rises II," but its appearance online immediately after the theatrical release of "Supergirl" was unexpected. Fans took it as a hint at the DC Universe's plans for Wonder Woman and Supergirl.
As for the Man of Tomorrow film itself, Gunn made it clear how important Kara is. During the Supergirl press conference, he told ExtraTV that the tension between Alcock's character and David Corenswet's Superman is "« an important part of this film, and then an even more important part "« The man of tomorrow »». This tension gives Kara a reason to keep appearing as the universe evolves.
Furthermore, Ana Nogueira is writing the Wonder Woman film, another sign of where Kara will appear next. The highly regarded DC screenwriter penned the screenplay for Supergirl, her first feature film, and Gunn also tasked her with working on the Wonder Woman reboot in the DC Universe. Gunn trusts Nogueira so much that he also commissioned her to direct the Teen Titans film before asking her to focus on Wonder Woman first.
Will a Wonder Woman movie featuring Supergirl be a success?
So, the big question is whether Kara's inclusion in a Wonder Woman film will work at all. It sounds good on paper, but a crossover is only useful if it benefits both characters. Diana's reboot needs to be a standalone story, and Kara needs more than just a cameo. Whether this pairing can succeed depends on how Nogueira executes it.
There's a good chance this is possible. Diana and Kara share a clear connection. Both are outcasts with immense power and a strong moral code, which gives the writer plenty of room to work with. A scene between them could play out the mentor-student dynamic familiar from the comics. Gunn is also tying the DC universe into a cohesive story, so a guest star wouldn't be a huge deal if it were done well.
The risks are as great as the rewards. Wonder Woman is a complete reboot, with a new actress replacing Gal Gadot. The film needs time to introduce its lead character and prove she can handle her story on her own. A famous co-star could detract from her. However, comic book characters appear in many other books, and this usually works well. Translating this to film is much more challenging, but it's nothing a good script and director can't handle.
