James Gunn's DC Studios has announced the release date for its second Batman project. Gunn and Peter Safran took over the company in late 2022 and soon after filled the schedule with Batman films and TV series, viewing the Dark Knight as the cornerstone of the rebooted DC Universe and the standalone projects surrounding it. This latest announcement continues this momentum, expanding the studio's already impressive arsenal of Batman projects.
The series in question is the second season of Batman: The Caped Crusader, with all 10 episodes set to debut on Prime Video on Friday, July 31. Prime Video recently confirmed the date and gave fans a taste of what's to come this season with a slew of first-look photos. The photos showed exciting new antagonists, including Edward Nygma and Roxy Rocket, ready to wreak havoc on the already chaotic streets of Gotham. An interesting twist about the second season of Batman: The Caped Crusader is that it is now recognized as a DC Studios project, something the studio didn't announce when the series first premiered in 2024.
At the time of the first season's release, the series wasn't classified as a DC Studios project, as the studio wasn't producing it. Announced in 2021, the project steadily progressed through 2022, when head writer Ed Brubaker was hired. Although initially planned for release on HBO Max and Cartoon Network, the series moved to Amazon Prime Video in 2023. At the time of the initial announcement, the DC Studios studio led by Gunn and Safran didn't yet exist. Instead, the first season was produced under existing contracts with Warner Bros. Animation, Bad Robot, 6th & Idaho, and DC Entertainment.
Now that DC Studios controls all DC-related content, the second season is officially under its umbrella. In its latest announcements, Prime Video explicitly acknowledged this change, labeling the series as a DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation production, something the first season did not. While the same creative team is still behind the series, the studio branding has changed. While this may seem like a minor detail, it's an important distinction: this new designation officially establishes The Batman season two as one of DC Studios' active Batman-related projects.
This explains why the second season is considered only the second Batman project to be released under the DC Studios banner. The first, the animated film Batman: Knightfall – Part 1, will have its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Festival in France from June 21 to 27, with a wider digital release expected later this year.
Since DC Studios' founding, the desire to create new Batman films has been immense. The studio is currently preparing to release a sequel to one of the best Batman films of the decade, Matt Reeves' The Batman. The first film was originally developed and released under the old DC Films banner and was a dark, neo-noir depiction of Bruce Wayne's early years. However, the sequel will become part of DC Studios' current portfolio as an independent saga.
Building directly on this foundation, DC Studios has been actively expanding this realistic corner of the mythology with the Batman-related project Penguin. This critically acclaimed crime drama series, created under Reeves' direction for HBO, is a direct continuation of the story begun in The Batman. It is also an official DC Studios project, set to release in 2024, after Gunn took over the studio. As good as the series is, it is reported that there will not be a second season. These projects are part of DC Studios' "Elseworlds" brand, allowing the studio to maintain its own distinctive creative visions without fitting them into a larger, interconnected cinematic universe.
Meanwhile, the main DC Universe hasn't been left out of the studio's plans. James Gunn is actively developing a standalone Batman project for the main DC Universe in the upcoming film The Brave and the Bold. Directed by Andy Muschietti, the film will star a brand new actor as Bruce Wayne and explore his complex relationship with his son, Damian Wayne, who takes up the mantle of Robin. By introducing a standalone, comic-book-correct Dark Knight into the main cinematic universe, DC Studios ensures that the main universe will continue to evolve alongside the standalone Elseworlds projects.

Clayface
The next Batman film to hit theaters is Clayface, a body-altering horror film directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen, an actor who transforms into the shape-shifting villain, and the film is set for release on October 23rd, after a change from its original September release date. Gunn confirmed that Clayface takes place before the events of Superman in the DC Universe, eliminating Batman from the plot entirely.
Brave and courageous
The true reboot of Batman in the DC Universe will be The Brave and the Bold, directed by Andy Muschietti and written by Christina Hodson. The film is inspired by Grant Morrison's comics and follows Bruce Wayne's encounter with Damian, the son he never knew he had with Talia al Ghul. The project doesn't yet have a release date or a lead actor, and Gunn has stated that the project still needs «"combat scenario", therefore, its release in the near future is unlikely.
Project Deathstroke/Bane«
Two more Batman-related films are in development. Reports of a yet-to-be-titled Deathstroke/Bane collaboration surfaced as early as 2024. Matthew Orton is set to write the script, and Greg Mottola, known for Peacemaker, is reportedly set to direct. Bane is the brute who famously broke Batman's spine, and Deathstroke, in the comics, pursues both the Dark Knight and the Teen Titans.
Teen Titans
Another DC film featuring Batman is in development—a Teen Titans film, with Ana Nogueira, the writer of Supergirl, writing the script. Nogueira submitted an initial draft of the script, but she's currently working on a Wonder Woman film, which is currently a higher priority for the studio. It will be some time before fans see their favorite team of sidekicks on screen.
Batman Part II
Matt Reeves will continue to develop his own corner of Gotham, independent of the DC Universe, in Batman: Part 2. Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne, and Marvel stars Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson have joined the cast. Stan was initially reported to play Harvey Dent, but recent reports claim he will be playing Victor Zsasz instead. Filming begins this month, and the sequel is scheduled to premiere on October 1, 2027.
Dynamic duet
Rounding out the lineup is an animated project. The animated film "Dynamic Duo," about Robins Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, will be released on June 30, 2028. Although this is a DC Studios Batman project, it is part of the "Elseworlds" series, meaning it is not part of the DC Universe.
