The first look at the future villain of the DC Universe in 2026 has been revealed, and it's a powerful cosmic antagonist who could reappear in Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters." DC Studios' television universe has already introduced numerous little-known and classic villains in animation and film, such as Ilana Rostovich in "Creature Commando" and Red St. Wilde, DC Studios' first original character with superpowers, in the second season of "Peacemaker." This roster of villains has laid a solid yet expansive foundation for Gunn's DC Universe, but DC Studios' upcoming release on HBO Max will take a huge step forward by introducing one of the franchise's most iconic and philosophically rich antagonists, comparable to major DC villains on the big screen, such as Lex Luthor and Lobo.
The official trailer for DC Studios' Green Lantern film, premiering August 16, features Sinestro for the first time. The iconic Green Lantern villain appears to be in captivity, where he is met by Hal Jordan. This shot highlights Sinestro's downfall, indicating that at this point in the story, he has been expelled from the Green Lantern Corps.
Interestingly, in this version of Sinestro, the villain appears to be from a period before the Sinestro Corps was created, with flashbacks tying into Hal Jordan's backstory as his former protégé.
Sinestro's inclusion in the DCEU adds another iconic villain. The cinematic universe has had many major villains beloved by fans in the comics, such as Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor in Superman and Jason Momoa's big-screen debut of Lobo in Supergirl.
Now another major foe is joining the universe, which could pave the way for DC's villainous Legion of Evil.
While he's not visible in the first image, Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen has been confirmed to play the sinister villain in The Lanterns, and is expected to bring his signature intensity to the role of the authoritarian, fear-ridden Sinestro.
Judging by Hal Jordan's war-worn costume, it appears this confrontation between him and Sinestro is taking place in the present day. Hal appears to be asking Sinestro for help in investigating a mysterious murder on Earth, suggesting the villain may have inside information about the incident.
This isn't Sinestro's first live-action appearance in DC Studios' Green Lantern. Mark Strong played Sinestro in the 2011 film Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds.
Strong delivered a brilliant performance as Sinestro, striking the perfect balance between charismatic mentor and morally ambiguous villain. Many fans considered Strong's casting as Sinestro one of the highlights of the 2011 DC film, posing a formidable challenge for Thomsen.
Ulrich Thomsen joins the all-star cast of "Lanterns," which also stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Nathan Fillion, Kelly Macdonald, and Garrett Dillahunt.

Ilana Rostovich
In the first season of James Gunn's Commando, Ilana Rostovich is introduced as a hidden main villain who initially appears to be protected by the royal princess of Pokolistan.
Squad M was sent to protect Ilana from assassination attempts by Circe and the Sons of Themyscira. However, a prophetic vision revealed her true nature: Ilana was a power-hungry dictator bent on global domination. This turn of events shifted the team's mission from protection to destruction, culminating in a brutal confrontation during which the Bride executed her.
In the first draft of the DC reboot, Ilana's appearance stood out for its unpredictability and brutality in the murder of Nina Mazursky, one of the original members of Task Force M.
Clayface
Before his big-screen debut in the 2026 film Clayface, Matt Hagan had already appeared as a dangerous villain in the first season of the animated series Creature Commando. In this animated series, Hagan portrayed the original Clayface, a shape-shifting monster capable of assuming the form of others.
Clayface posed as Dr. Isla MacPherson to manipulate Amanda Waller into believing Circe had been compromised. The DC villain engaged Rick Flag Sr., brutally wounding him and nearly defeating Frankenstein.
Clayface's role in Monster Commando showcased his dangerous, sinister nature, giving insight into how Matt Hagen succumbed to darkness after the events of his prequel.
Circe
Circe, a villain from the Wonder Woman universe, made her DC animated series debut in the first season of Creature Commando as one of the main antagonists and the initial target of Task Force M.
As a renegade sorceress from Amazonia, Circe launched an attack on Pokolistan to eliminate Princess Ilana Rostovich, whom she considered a threat to her larger ambitions for world domination.
Circe is infamous for presenting a vision of a dystopian future in which Ilana conquered the world with the help of her metahuman allies. At the end of "Creature Commandos," Circe was sent to Belle Reve and confirmed to be alive, setting the stage for her return in future projects.
Rupert Thorne
The first season of Creature Commandos also saw the debut of another Batman villain, Rupert Thorne, who served as the catalyst for Doctor Phosphorus' origin story.
A corrupt industrialist and crime boss from Gotham City, Thorne wanted to sell the technology to the country of Bialya, but Phosphorus gave him a false date, which led to his brutal revenge - the murder of his own family.
While his role was minor in the DC Universe reboot, Thorne's actions had a lasting impact, as they directly led to the creation of one of the most monstrous members of Task Force M.
Captain Triumph
Captain Triumph (aka Christopher Smith's brother, Keith) played a significant role in the second season of Peacemaker as the titular character's brother from the alternate reality of Earth-X, a twisted dimension where the Nazis won.
Keith operated under the name Captain Triumph, a member of this Earth's Great Trio, alongside the alternate version of Peacemaker and their father, Auggie Smith, also known as the Blue Dragon. Although initially portrayed as a heroic older brother, he fell to the dark side after killing the Blue Dragon, Vigilante.
James Gunn confirmed that Peacemaker season two served as a backstory for the supervillain Captain Triumph, setting the stage for his return as Christopher's rival in a potential third season or other projects.
Red Street Wild
In the second season of Peacemaker, Michael Rooker returned to DC after his brief stint on Suicide Squad. Rooker appeared as the original character Red St. Wilde, who served as Igli's rival in the DC Universe.
Red was hired by ARGUS for the sole purpose of eliminating Igli. The villain possessed unusual tracking magic, hyper-accurate senses, and elite marksmanship, making him a formidable adversary for Igli.
However, in Season 2, Episode 5 of Peacemaker, it was revealed that Red St. Wilde had been brutally attacked by a flock of eagles, leaving his fate unclear.
Rick Flag Sr.
After making his debut in Superman 2025, Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. returned for Peacemaker's second season, gradually evolving into a ruthless villain seeking revenge against the titular hero for the death of his son in Suicide Squad.
As the director of A.R.G.U.S., Flag made questionable decisions throughout the show's second season, forming an unlikely alliance with Lex Luthor and gaining access to advanced technology to locate Planet Salvation, which he believed to be a remote prison for metahumans.
Rick Flag Sr. is set to appear in the 2027 film "Man of Tomorrow," potentially continuing the "Salvation" storyline that began in "Peacemaker" season 2.
