A bathroom floor is a surface that experiences tremendous stress: constant humidity, temperature fluctuations, contact with household chemicals, and, of course, mechanical stress. Ceramic tile has always been and remains the undisputed leader among flooring options for this space, and for good reason. But simply buying the first beautiful tile you see is a surefire path to disappointment. I've seen more than one case where, within a year or two of installation, the grout turns black, the glaze wears off, and the bathroom floor tiles crack from the slightest impact. To prevent this, you need to understand the difference between ceramic tile and porcelain stoneware, what constitutes a rough surface, and why a 20x20 cm size often outperforms larger formats. Let's explore the technical specifications, selection considerations, and installation nuances together, so your floor will be not only beautiful but also practical for years to come.
The first and most important rule: bathroom floor tiles and wall tiles are two completely different products. Floor tiles should be thicker (usually 8-9 mm), have a high wear resistance rating (PEI III-IV, although II is suitable for a bathroom), and, crucially, a high coefficient of friction (anti-slip properties). On the packaging, look for a pictogram depicting a foot on a shaded background or the words "R9" or "R10" (the higher the number, the rougher the surface). Glossy floors become slippery after exposure to water, so for the bathroom, choose a matte, textured, or lapped (slightly textured) surface.
Basic Types of Floor Tiles: What's Behind the Names?
You'll find several categories in stores, and it's important to know the key differences between them.
- Tile (glazed ceramic tile). The most common and often most affordable option. It is made from clay mass by pressing, then coated with glaze (enamel), and fired. For bathroom floors, choose tiles with low water absorption (no more than 3%). Its weak point is the glaze. When choosing, consider the glaze's wear resistance class (PEI). For a home, II-III is sufficient.
- Porcelain stoneware. A leader in strength and moisture resistance, it is produced from a mixture of high-quality clays, quartz sand, feldspar, and mineral pigments under high pressure, followed by firing at temperatures exceeding 1200°C. The resulting material has a water absorption rate of less than 0.5% and is comparable in hardness to granite. It is resistant to frost, impact, acids, and alkalis. Ideal for floors, it is generally more expensive than tile and more difficult to cut.
- Clinker. A tile made by extrusion (pressing dough through a mold). It's very dense, wear-resistant, and has low water absorption. It often has a distinct textured surface, imitating stone or antique paving stones. It's an excellent choice for creating a specific style, such as country.
- Monocottura. Single-fired tiles. Denser than regular tiles, but less durable than porcelain stoneware. A good compromise between price and quality for interior use.

Why 20x20 cm tiles are the gold standard for bathrooms
With sizes ranging from 5x5 cm mosaics to large-format 60x60 cm tiles, it's the 20x20 cm square (or the similar 30x30 cm) that remains the most popular for bathrooms. Here's why:
- Versatility of installation. These tiles can be laid straight, staggered, diagonally, or combined to create interesting patterns. Larger formats offer fewer options.
- Waste minimization. When laying tiles in a standard rectangular bathroom, the number of cuts (trimmed tiles) will be minimal, which saves money and time.
- Visual scale. 20x20 cm squares don't overwhelm a small bathroom, yet they don't "disappear" into a larger one, creating a harmonious grid. They don't visually shrink the room, unlike large tiles on a small floor.
- Resistance to floor level changes. If the base is not perfectly level (the permissible difference is 2 mm per 2 meters), it is easier to «play» the level with small tiles than with large-format ones, which will «walk» at the corners.
- Strength. The smaller size means less internal stress in the tile and less risk of cracking from point impacts or deformation of the substrate.

DIY installation technology: key steps
High-quality installation is the key to success. Even the most expensive tiles laid on a crooked base will look poorly laid. The entire process can be broken down into several crucial steps.
- Preparing the base. This is the most important and labor-intensive step. The old covering (linoleum, tiles) must be removed. The base (screed) must be strong, clean, and level. Check with a 2-meter straightedge: gaps underneath should not exceed 2-3 mm. All protrusions are knocked down, and holes and cracks are repaired with cement mortar. If the unevenness is significant, it is better to pour a new self-leveling screed. Be sure to prime the surface to improve adhesion.
- Waterproofing. This is especially important in apartment buildings and on the ground floors. Apply a coating waterproofing (cement or polymer-based) to a clean and level surface using a brush or spatula. Be sure to extend it up the walls by 10-15 cm. This will protect the neighbors below from potential leaks.
- Marking and dry layout. Don't rush to spread the adhesive. Lay the tiles on the floor from the center out to the walls, allowing for gaps (use plastic spacers). This will help you see where and what cuts will be made, and you can adjust the layout to ensure more intact tiles are laid near the walls. Determine the lines from which you will begin laying.
- Preparing glue. Use only specialized tile adhesive for wet areas. Mix it strictly according to the instructions with a mixer until it is smooth and lump-free. Let it set for 5-10 minutes and mix again.
- Laying. Apply adhesive with a notched trowel (8-10 mm notch for flooring) to both the base and back of the tile (use the "double spread" method for better adhesion). Lay the tiles, pressing gently and rotating them from side to side to distribute the adhesive evenly. Check the level of the laid surface regularly. Immediately remove any excess adhesive that has seeped into the joints. To cut the tiles, use a tile cutter (for straight cuts) or an angle grinder with a diamond blade (for complex cuts).
- Grouting. Do not begin grouting until at least 24-48 hours after installation (see adhesive instructions). Remove the spacers. Prepare the grout mixture, preferably with an anti-fungal additive. Using a rubber trowel, press the mixture into the joints, filling them tightly. After 15-20 minutes, when the mixture has set slightly, wash the tiles with a damp sponge, leaving the grout in the joints. After the surface has completely dried (after 24 hours), polish it with a dry cloth.
Finishing touches and care
After grouting, the floor is ready for use. For additional protection against moisture and dirt, the grout can be treated with a special water-repellent impregnation. This will create an invisible, water-repellent barrier. Maintenance of this type of floor is simple: regular damp mopping with neutral detergents. Avoid acidic and abrasive cleaners, which can damage the glaze or grout. Properly selected and professionally installed tiles will last for decades, maintaining their original appearance and creating a reliable foundation for the wettest room in the house.
