Summer is back in full swing! And with it, Season 8 of Love Island USA on Peacock, featuring host Ariana Madix, narrator Ian Stirling, and a new group of single contestants looking for love. It officially kicks off with the arrival of marketing director and Georgia native Aniya Harvey, who says she's looking for a husband and expects to have a ring by the end of the season, and fellow Georgia native Kenzie Annis, who graduated from medical school the day before flying to Fiji. She says she "got my virginity back because it's been a year and a half." Next up is Melanie Moreno, from the Philadelphia/Los Angeles area, who says she doesn't use the term "girly girl"—"If you hear that, it'll be damn disturbing"—which could be a reference to the Season 7 contestants, who repeated the phrase throughout their entire run. Rounding out the women's group are Paralympian Beatrice Hatz and Trinity Tatum. Hatz, a San Diego native who runs track and considers herself competitive, jokes that Tatum, who quit her job at a hardware store to join Love Island, is "hired for charisma" and is looking for a "golden retriever" type of man. The sixth contestant (Wasana Montgomery) was eliminated after a video surfaced of her singing along to racial slurs.
After everyone has gotten acquainted, Madix joins the group, and it gets to the interesting part—why they're there. Moreno says she hasn't had much luck in romance, but she has so much love to give; Tatum joins Harvey in searching for a husband; Annis says she's "not a list girl" (which she admits is a Love Island plot); Harvey says she dates a lot of men and won't settle for less; and Hatz has dealt with men's insecurities because of her career. Bryce Dettloff and Sincere Rhea are the first men to arrive; Rhea is a track and field athlete (like Hatz) and is smart enough not to say he could beat a Team USA athlete in a race. Rhea says his parents would call him a "ladies' man," and admits he is: "It would be selfish not to share the love." Dettloff, a New York model, says he's "sensitive and emotional" to the chorus of endearments—and to Annis's description of him as "henpecked." "We're not saying it's a bad thing!" she adds. Then Zach Georgiou—Charlie Georgiou's younger brother from Season 7—enters and immediately introduces himself as a relative, at Madix's request. Incidentally, the Birmingham native's introduction is "What Makes You Beautiful," as Georgiou "loves One Direction." As for women, he's looking for a "fun, cool American girl." Police officer Sean Reiffel (who says the civilian and her family called him "Officer Sexapunz") reveals he's a father! Papacy? Unlike Huda Mustafa from Season 7, Reiffel quickly tells the group about his son and that he moved to Pennsylvania to support the mother of his child. Reiffel is joined by nurse's aide and Californian Casey Chandler, who admits he enjoys the chase but "would rather be the lover." He loves his freedom, but is willing to give it up for the right woman, FYI. Madix announces the first 10 contestants of the season, after which they immediately take a multiple-choice compatibility test. Contestants stand behind doors, each marked with answer options. If a door opens for more than one person, the contestants must kiss each person on the other side. Questions range from favorite sex position (Madix asks the contestants why each chose that position); whether you like dogs, cats, or plants; whether it's okay to check your partner's phone; and whether you're here to find love—answers are divided into "no," "maybe," and "hell yeah!"—which obviously leads to group kissing, ensuring every contestant of the opposite sex gets a kiss. After the final round, the girls choose which guy they want to pair up with. Tatum chooses Dettloff, becoming the season's first couple; Hutz chooses Reiffel after they've kissed each other in every round of the blindfolded game; no one claims Chandler's spot, who ends up paired with Harvey after Rhea chooses Moreno; and Annis is paired with Georgiou. The evening doesn't end there—each couple goes off to get to know each other better, with much talk about the Eagles, Georgiou's "darker features," the seven-year age difference between Tatum and Dettloff, and country music, which Hutz "would rather have another disability" than listen to. Afterward, they split into guys and girls for a debriefing. Day two begins with Tatum revealing she's never had avocado toast before ("sacrilege on Love Island"), and Georgiou unsure if he and Annis "get along." Rhea and Moreno also share a passionate kiss, with Dettloff saying he "doesn't want to steal [Tatum's] youth," as he's almost 30 and she's 22. Madix appears at night to call the group to a bonfire, where she announces that each contestant will have to decide whether to stay with their partner or start a new relationship by standing on color-coded green and red dots, respectively, behind more closed doors. Before the doors open to reveal the contestants' choices, two new beauties enter the villa, ready to kiss the contestants on the red dots: Gabriel Vasconcelos, demoted from the first generation to balance the pool after Montgomery's elimination, ultimately leads Tatum and Hatz out of the villa hand in hand, while Kayda Reese Bosse chooses Georgiou and Dettloff, leaving the rest of the contestants shocked and confused by the outcome.
