This astonishing casting story resurfaced recently, when the director recalled how one of Hollywood's most iconic characters almost ended up in completely different hands.
Harrison Ford was not the first choice to play Indiana Jones.
Before filming began on the 1981 film Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Spielberg and his colleague George Lucas spent considerable time searching for the right actor to play Indiana Jones. In an IMO podcast with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, Spielberg revealed that actor Tom Selleck won their hearts during the auditions.
Spielberg said he and Lucas auditioned several actors before agreeing that Selleck was the perfect choice. "We wanted Tom. We gave Tom the role," Spielberg said. He also joked that if Selleck had accepted the role, he wouldn't have been allowed to keep his signature mustache for the film.
The plan ultimately fell through due to Selleck's commitments to CBS. At the time, the actor was busy with the series "Magnum, P.I.", and contractual obligations prevented him from participating in the film. As work on the television series progressed, the timing simply didn't work out.
This unexpected setback opened the door for Harrison Ford. Spielberg recalled watching an early screening of The Empire Strikes Back with Lucas and suggesting Ford for the role. Lucas was initially hesitant, as audiences already knew Ford as Han Solo, but Spielberg believed the actor could successfully portray another important character. Soon after, Lucas sent Ford the script, and the actor accepted the role.
In retrospect, this decision changed the course of film history. Ford subsequently starred in five Indiana Jones films, beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark and ending with 2023's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The franchise has expanded significantly beyond cinemas, spawning television shows, video games, books, and theme park attractions.
Meanwhile, Spielberg made it clear that he still holds Selleck in high regard, calling him a "wonderful guy" and saying he adored him.
