Jackie, the beloved Big Bear bald eagle whose nest captivated millions of internet users, has died.
Orel died early Monday morning after a long battle with anemia.
Jackie, found in the wild in poor condition, received intensive treatment from the veterinary team at the Ojai Raptor Research Center.

She remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit, where she received oxygen, supportive care, and 24-hour monitoring at the Ojai Raptor Center.

«"Throughout her time at the Ojai Raptor Center, every decision was made based on the available medical information, her well-being, and our responsibility to act in her best interests," the center said in a post on Instagram.
«"We know this news will deeply touch the thousands of people around the world who followed her journey, hoped for the best with us, prayed for her, and supported those who cared for her. Our team is deeply saddened. It was a great privilege to care for her," the statement read.
A video filmed by a local wildlife watcher and circulated online shows Jackie being attacked by two other young eagles shortly before her hospitalization. It is unknown whether she was already ill before the attack.

Jackie's remains were sent to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).
The Ojai Raptor Center also said it is working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to provide additional information about the treatment and test results.
Jackie and her partner, Shadow, gained national attention for raising eaglets in Big Bear.

For years, the couple's daily life was monitored through a livestream camera by the wildlife conservation nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley.
The nonprofit estimates that Jackie lived for about 14 years and gave birth to several eaglets with Shadow, including Simba, Spirit, Sunny, Gizmo, and her two last hatched eaglets, Luna and Sandy.

After being hospitalized, Jackie Shadow was reportedly seen with another female eagle, while ornithologists have been unable to locate Luna and Sandy for several weeks.
The Orange County Water Authority identified the new eagle as KD1, a female born in 2022 in the Prado River basin, more than 100 miles away.
