Alyson Hannigan, known to fans of the series «Buffy the Vampire Slayer» as witch Willow Rosenberg, paid tribute to her co-star Anthony Head, the man who played Rupert Giles on the long-running mystery series.

Head died at age 72 from "complications from pneumonia," the late actor's daughters, Emily and Daisy, said Friday.

«"This wound is so deep I'm afraid it will never heal. 💔," Hannigan wrote in a statement posted on social media. "Oh, Tonal... I'm so grateful you were in my life! I want to say a million beautiful words about you, but I can't find the right ones. I love you so much and will miss you forever. Rest in peace.".

Although Head, as Giles, was primarily the Watcher, responsible for overseeing Buffy Summers, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, the vampire slayer, he had a complex but deeply warm relationship with Willow. In Buffy's main team, they were both warlocks; Willow, more so.

Giles often served as a mentor to the young witch, though things took a more serious turn when Willow succumbed to dark magic (such as in Season 6's "Dark Willow" saga).

Veterans of the series' cast «Buffy» , which aired for seven seasons starting in 1997, has suffered more losses than most series in recent years.

Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy's younger sister, Dawn, died in February 2025 at age 39 from complications related to diabetes. Just two months earlier, in March 2026, Nicholas Brendon, aka Xander Harris, died at age 54. An autopsy confirmed that Brendon died from atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, as well as acute pneumonia and a previous myocardial infarction (commonly referred to as a heart attack).

Last year, Hannigan wrote about Trechtenberg on social media, noting that "she brought a loving energy to the Buffy set.".

Of Brandon, with whom she developed a closer relationship, the actress wrote: "My sweet Nicky, thank you for the years of laughter, love, and the Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you.".
