Condolences have poured in from around the world following the death of Peabo Bryson. The R&B singer, known to many for such Disney hits as "Beauty and the Beast" and "A Whole New World," passed away peacefully at 5:00 PM ET on Tuesday (June 2), his family confirmed.
«"It is with broken hearts and deep sorrow that the family of two-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and balladeer Peabo Bryson announces his passing," the statement said, adding that the "If Ever You're in My Arms Again" hitmaker was "surrounded by the love of his family and those closest to him" when he died.
«"We are deeply touched by the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from fans, friends, and colleagues around the world," they shared. "While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing how deeply Peabo was loved and how many people his voice and generous spirit touched. His legacy and music will live on for generations to come.".
The cause of death was not disclosed, although it was announced on Sunday (May 31) that Bryson had suffered a stroke. Among the celebrities who expressed their sincere condolences over Bryson's death was Celine Dion, who shared the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1993. "I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Peabo Bryson," she began. "His incredible voice and kind spirit embodied the beauty of song and performance.".
Then the musician, known for the song Taking Chances, Dion recalled how "wonderful and generous" Bryson was, even when she was still learning to sing in English. "He will forever be a true symbol of the joy music brought to my life. We will miss his voice and talent," Dion continued. "My heart goes out to your family, and may you rest in peace, Peabo.".
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens also paid tribute to Bryson, praising his "exceptional talent, timeless artistry, and inimitable voice." Meanwhile, one X user noted how rare singers of his caliber are today: "Back then, there were Teddy Pendergrass, Luther Vandross, Freddie Jackson, Peabo Bryson, Al DeBarge, and countless others.
