From the moment she entered this world, Cleopatra Coleman knew Ebony Wilder was a character worth pursuing.
The 38-year-old actress starred in the acclaimed Netflix crime thriller «"Nemesis"» , which premiered on May 14, follows the dangerous clash between Coltrane Wilder (Ilan Noel) and Detective Isaiah Stiles (Matthew Law), combining intense action, family drama, and personal loss.
At the center of it all is Coleman's character, Ebony, a woman dealing with grief, fighting for loyalty, and trying to survive in a world where every decision has consequences.
In an interview with PEOPLE about the series' cliffhanger finale, Coleman discussed the challenge of the role that drew her to the role, the emotionally devastating scenes that brought tears to the entire set, and her thoughts on the series' shocking final moments.

«"I think what I love most about Ebony is that she's constantly changing," Coleman says. "She can surprise you. She's surprised me many times. One moment she can be incredibly strong, and the next, she can be an emotional wreck. She's a woman who's used to being in control, but grief has broken something inside her.".
This unpredictability was one of the aspects of the character that Coleman found most interesting to explore. "It's always fun to play a character with multiple facets, and Ebony is certainly very dynamic," she says.
Coleman has previously compared Ebony to Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth, but she says the comparison isn't entirely accurate.
«"I think in some ways it's a description of Lady Macbeth and in some ways it's not, because we all know what happened to Macbeth, and I don't wish that on Coltrane, and I don't think that's his path," she explains.
«"But I'm always drawn to women with complex emotional experiences—women trying to survive, trying to stay strong, trying to stay loved. I love how strategically Ebony takes care of her own safety and the safety of her family. In that sense, she's very relatable. I love stories where everything is exaggerated, but the emotional truth is there.".
Much of Ebony's life journey is shaped by profound loss, though Coleman notes that viewers meet her long after the initial shock of the miscarriage.
«"It's interesting that when we meet Ebony, many months have passed since the grief or loss began," she says. "So it was like we were holding three versions of her in our hands at once. There was the past version of Ebony, who was in control, with nerves of steel. There was the present version of Ebony, who was changing, hard to pin down, and she's not entirely sure herself—her entire nervous system has changed. And then there's this future Ebony, who I think has become stronger, more insightful, and more powerful precisely because of this.".
While emotionally charged material can take a toll on one's well-being, Coleman has developed her own method to help her cope with difficult moments and get back on track.
«"I think acting can definitely be emotionally draining, but that's why you have to constantly keep yourself on your toes and try to have a happy life outside of work," she says. "Luckily for me, I'm very happy on set. I'm the kind of actor who can be in the depths of despair and crying, and then the moment they call 'cut,' I'm laughing. I don't like to dwell on that. I like to be in and out, and that can sometimes be a little confusing for the crew.".

However, one particular scene was almost impossible for those around him to shake off.
«On the set «Nemesis» "There was a moment where we all burst into tears," Coleman recalls. "The crew was crying, the cameraman was crying, Courtney [A. Kemp] was crying, the makeup artist was crying, and everyone was coming up to me to hug me and hold me—and I was just laughing because I was so emotional." The moment came after one of the most emotional hospital scenes on the show.
Coleman says the actors worked tirelessly to make each relationship feel authentic.
«"What I love most about our cast is that we all worked so hard to make our relationships feel real, realistic, and grounded—not just the marriages, but the father-son relationships on both sides, like Isaiah Stiles," she says. "There are so many complex relationships there.".
For Coleman and Noel, her on-screen husband, laying that foundation was an integral part of the process.
«"When you really put a lot of effort into making something believable, Ilan and I especially appreciate the chemistry we have," she says. "To say we work hard at it is to say we don't have it—it definitely does. But when you connect with another actor, you don't just show up for work. You feel like you're creating something special.".
As for the cliffhanger ending, Coleman understands why viewers are already clamoring for a second season.

«"By the time you get to this episode, you're just frozen in place," she says. "Everything is heating up. It's kind of crazy in the best sense of the word. So much happens in the first episode, and then it just gets more and more dynamic.".
However, despite all the spectacular action and mounting tension, Coleman believes it is the emotional component that sets this series apart from others.
«"What I love most about this show and what Courtney and Tani [Marolle] have done is that they've created an incredibly fast-paced, exciting action series with a beautiful human element," she says.
«"I think the final scene with Isaiah and Coltrane really showcases that because it's incredibly tense. It's been a cat-and-mouse game up to that point, but really, it's about family. It's about Isaiah Stiles' family and his son, and what Coltrane is going to do to find Ebony. That's what this show is all about.".
Looking to the future, Coleman doesn't limit herself to any specific genre. Whether it's action, comedy, romance, or thriller, she says compelling characters will always be her defining factor.
«"I'm interested in all of this," she says. "I think the most important thing for me is the character's psychology. The more specific, the more complex, the better. In many ways, I see myself as an anthropologist. I'm genuinely curious about psychology and what drives people. If I can get inside the mind of a complex person, it gives me great pleasure.".
