There are dozens of different frog species in the wild. Of course, not all of them possess the extraordinary ability to change sex. But green tree frogs are a notable exception! Furthermore, only male green tree frogs can change sex. However, this ability is not common among male green tree frogs.
A recent scientific study observed green tree frogs in 18 different habitats and found that less than 5 percent of the frogs had changed sex. The exact reason why green tree frogs change sex remains unknown. However, experts believe this ability may have made them more resilient to environmental factors.
2. Slugs
Slugs, some of the most fascinating creatures in the wild, occupy a privileged position even among animals capable of changing sex. First of all, these hermaphroditic creatures, possessing both male and female reproductive organs, do not require a partner to reproduce! However, they mate to increase genetic diversity and minimize the number of harmful mutations. Slugs can also change sex if necessary!
3. Bearded dragons
Bearded dragons are also among the animals capable of changing sex in the wild. Moreover, the sex of these unusual reptiles changes depending on the ambient temperature! Sex reversal is quite common among male bearded dragons living in areas where the ambient temperature exceeds 32 degrees Celsius.
When temperatures rise above 36 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit), all male bearded dragons undergo a sex change. Moreover, according to some scientific studies, dragons that become females can produce twice as many eggs as those that don't undergo the transformation.
4. Ribbon acne
All males of this deep-ocean fish species, prized for its attractive coloration, bid farewell to the females! Male ribbon eels begin to feminize, or change sex, once they reach adulthood!
5. Green sea turtles
The sex of green sea turtles, like bearded dragons, is determined by ambient temperature. If temperatures exceed a certain level, male green sea turtles begin to transform into females. However, this ability to change sex could lead to the extinction of green sea turtles!
Because the Pacific Ocean, home to green sea turtles, is where the effects of global warming are clearly visible. Ocean temperatures are rising daily. For this reason, scientists claim that 99 percent of the green sea turtle population are female!
6. Hawkfish
The ability to change gender is an extremely rare and fascinating ability. But when it comes to the hawkfish, things get even more interesting!
Hawkfish live in groups consisting of one male and several females. However, when the number of females in a group increases uncontrollably, some females may change sex. This is where the hawkfish becomes unique, even among animals capable of changing sex. Fish that change sex and become males due to an increase in the number of females in the population may revert to females if the number of females in the group decreases!
All Napoleon fish are born female. However, between 5 and 7 years of age, during puberty, some females undergo a sex change. The appearance of a sex-changing Napoleon fish also varies significantly.
8. Sea bass
Sea bass is one of those sea creatures that can easily be found on the menu of any restaurant in the world. However, it's unknown whether it possesses the amazing ability to change sex. After female sea bass reach sexual maturity (a period that takes between 2 and 5 years), they can change sex.
On the other hand, scientists have not reached a consensus on the exact reason why sea bass change sex. However, many scientists believe that sea bass change sex to balance the ratio of males to females in the population.
9. Clownfish
Unlike other creatures on our list, clownfish change sex voluntarily, not due to environmental factors! In other words, they can change their gender at any stage of their lives if they so choose. Of course, there are some factors that can cause these adorable creatures to change sex.
Social balance within the group in which they live is one of the most important factors determining the sex of clownfish. Clownfish live in small schools, usually led by a female. If the female, who is physically larger than the males, disappears, one of the males in the school changes sex and becomes both the leader of the school and the mother of the new clownfish.
