Hugh Jackman recently stated that the anger that fuels Wolverine, exists within him, though it rarely manifests. After spending more than two decades as Marvel's most famous mutant, Jackman says the role shaped him in unexpected ways. The actor reflected on how playing the role affected both his personality and the way he deals with emotions.
Hugh Jackman shares this trait with his character Wolverine.
Most fans know Jackman as the charming Wolverine, but the actor himself says he and the character have more in common than one might expect. During his appearance on Last Meals, Jackman explained that audiences typically see a carefully crafted version of themselves. "The Hugh you see now is the version of me I want you to see," he told host Josh Scherer.
Eventually, the conversation turned to anger—a character trait often associated with Wolverine. Jackman acknowledged that he has "a lot of that rage," though it only surfaces occasionally. He even suggested that playing the character may have helped him channel those feelings in a healthy way. "Maybe it's rare because I've played Wolverine. That's the beauty of it," he said, adding that he still finds it easy to tap into that emotional intensity when needed.
One example occurred during the filming of Deadpool and Wolverine. Jackman recalled a fight scene with Ryan Reynolds that seemed so convincing that Reynolds jokingly feared it might turn out to be real. Afterward, Reynolds reportedly told him, "There was no doubt in my mind you were going to punch me in the face." Jackman laughed about the moment but acknowledged that the emotions behind Wolverine are genuine enough to be easily ingrained. "But it's easy for me to connect to. So it's there, man," Jackman says.
Jackman first played Wolverine in the 2000 X-Men film and subsequently portrayed the mutant in nine more films, including last year's blockbuster Deadpool and Wolverine. In addition to his work with Marvel, the actor has earned acclaim for projects such as The Prestige, Les Miserables, Prisoners, and The Greatest Showman.
