Jamil "Mel" Clay claims it was Drake who first alerted him to the explosive content of Jay-Z's "Roots Picnic" freestyle he performed over the weekend.
In a recent episode of his podcast, New Rory & MAL , which he co-hosts with Rory Farrell and is available on Netflix, Mal recalled that when he was generally in a negative mood towards his phone, he would watch a Tottenham match instead.
«"The funniest thing about this whole thing is that Drake was the one who told me about this freestyle because I was watching the Spurs game," he said. "I wasn't online. It was Game 7. The Knicks were waiting. I was trying to figure out who the Knicks were playing, so I wasn't even paying attention to my phone or anything. And then, like, there was a break or something, and I look at my phone and I see messages from Drake.".
As everyone already knows, HOV said a lot in his freestyle, including several lines directed at Drake. Although the artist's name hit "Iceman"« It was not mentioned directly, the purpose of the key lines was clear from the start.

«"I don't know what's going on, so I don't even know what we talked about," Mal said of his subsequent exchange with Drake. "He highlighted certain phrases, but Drake responded with something like, 'Hey, what's up with your hair?' Mind you, I didn't see the photo.".
At this point, Rory intervened and joked that "Drake would get killed for this," after which Mal continued.
«"No, but everyone was asking, 'What's wrong with your hair?'" Mal said. "Everyone was shocked... We'd never seen Jay with an afro.".
