Jimmy Fallon was almost baffled by the number of hats 20-year-old director Kane Parsons wore to bring the new box office horror hit "Behind the Scenes" to life.
On Thursday's episode of "The Tonight Show," Parsons discussed the development of the film starring Chiwetel Ejiofor with Fallon, confirming that he's been working on "Backrooms" in some capacity since he was 16.
«"It was a direct result of working on this project on YouTube, but, you know, it just naturally… the views got the attention," he said, before explaining how the concept originated from a viral 4chan post. "I think the way it played out online is like an urban legend or an internet fairy tale.".
Parsons continued, explaining that he reimagined the urban legend with a sci-fi twist, uploading his own series of found-footage-style short films after mastering visual effects software himself. He added, "People saw it, and somehow it spiraled out of control—and now there's a movie.".
Fallon admitted to being a fan of "Behind the Scenes," praising the independent horror film as "weird and cool." After his glowing description of the film, Fallon asked Parsons about the score, calling it "fantastic.".
That's when Parsons struck a chord with Fallon. "I co-wrote the film's score with Edo van Bremen," the director said. "I've been composing music for my films online for years. And I think I'd be just as happy producing music. It brings me a lot of joy.".
However, Parsons admitted that he often feels like "a caveman smashing rocks together" because he has no formal musical training. (Notably, Parsons also has no formal film school training.)
However, Fallon assured Parsons he didn't need it, noting, "Good job. Don't study. Whatever you're doing, it's working. It's great. Don't look at anything.".
