The 86th annual Peabody Awards honored Hollywood heavyweights and trailblazers, including Jimmy Kimmel, Amy Poehler, and James L. Brooks, and de facto became a defense of free speech.

Following a musical tribute to Sly Stone performed by Aloe Blacc, host Mo Amer spoke about the importance of the evening's winners and what their work means to audiences both at home and abroad.

The theme of the performance—speaking truth to power—was not only the evening's theme but also the first award category. Ben Affleck introduced the category and its winners, including the late-night show host Jimmy Kimmel, whose talk show was briefly canceled by ABC last fall.

«"For years, he used his show to challenge authority figures on a daily basis. And by authority figure, I think we all know what that means. «"We have a right, guaranteed by the Constitution, to criticize and ridicule our leaders," Kimmel said, adding that he exercised that right "for the first 57 years of my life, until last September, when the Federal Communications Commission gave me a very unpleasant surprise.".

Matt Groening, co-creator of the animated series «The Simpsons» , Emmy Award winner James L. Brooks presented the Industry Icon Award.
