ImGist - I Am the Essence

Kevin Costner's 2024 Western, which flopped at the box office and had no sequel, has found a new home on streaming services.

Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 bombed at the box office, but it may get a second life on streaming platforms. The Western is currently available on Amazon Prime Video, so everyone will be able to catch it before the sequel's release... if it ever does.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, which our review called "the most expensive sequel trailer ever," is set against the backdrop of the Civil War and tells the story of several characters traveling west. Costner, who also directed and co-wrote the film, plays Hayes Ellison, a loner who teams up with a woman named Marigold (Abbey Lee) after they fall out of favor with some bad guys.

«Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 isn't one of the best Westerns of all time, but it's an ambitious film that Costner conceived as the first installment in a planned four-film series. Therefore, it feels like the first chapter of a novel, which may not appeal to audiences looking for a complete story. At the same time, Western fans have plenty to enjoy, and it seems like it would be a great franchise if the entire story were adapted.

Unfortunately, the film's poor box office performance led to the sequel being postponed indefinitely, but that didn't stop Costner from sticking to his original plan. With that in mind, let's find out what's happening with the sequels.

Will there ever be a sequel to the Horizon series?

Hayes Ellison (Kevin Costner) sits on a horse in "Skyline: An American Saga - Chapter 1." - Warner Bros.

Kevin Costner has dreamed of making the Horizon saga since the 1980s, so he's not letting disappointing box office results derail his plans. Although the second film has already been shot and even screened at a film festival, its release has been canceled and appears to be stuck in limbo. Meanwhile, development on the third film has stalled, but Costner is negotiating with wealthy individuals for financing. Furthermore, Costner is confident he can complete the story. As he told Deadline:

«"I don't know how I'm going to do it, but I'm going to do it, and then I'll do the fourth one. And if you want to say 'the end' at that point, then that will be the end.".

Costner added that the Horizon franchise is his "personal UFO." He's obsessed with bringing the entire story to the screen, so don't expect him to give up anytime soon. Meanwhile, most fans would be thrilled to see Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2, but its release date in theaters or on streaming platforms is still unknown. However, perhaps Amazon Prime Video will try to pick it up if the first film performs well on streaming platforms? We'll see.
