ImGist - I Am the Essence

Two 2026 blockbusters are approaching the $1 billion mark at the box office.

Two major 2026 films are approaching the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Both films recently surpassed significant milestones, becoming among the year's biggest commercial successes. One is an animated sequel already dominating the spring season, and the other is a musical biopic quietly rewriting industry records. Neither has officially crossed the threshold yet, but it is expected to do so very soon.

The Super Mario Galaxy movie and Michael are very close to reaching a major milestone.

Super Mario Galaxy's worldwide box office haul currently stands at $991.8 million, just $8.2 million shy of $1 billion. Projections indicate it will become the first film of 2026 to surpass that mark, possibly as early as this weekend.

Additionally, the animated sequel grossed $427 million in the US and $564.7 million internationally. Over the first five days of the Easter weekend, it grossed $190.1 million in North America, the second-highest opening weekend ever, behind only its predecessor. Over its three-day run, it grossed $130.9 million (according to Box Office Mojo).

On the other hand, Lionsgate's Michael Jackson biopic has grossed $846.2 million worldwide in just over a month, according to Box Office Mojo. Over the past week, the film has added over $58 million to its worldwide total, maintaining its momentum. At this rate, it could break the record in the coming weeks.

International markets played a key role in the film's success. Almost $601,000 of the film's total revenue came from countries outside the US and Canada. Notably, the film has not yet been released in Japan, where it premieres on June 12. Only there can it surpass the $1 billion mark.

The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, stars Jaafar Jackson, the singer's nephew, making his feature film debut. The film chronicles Jackson's life, from the Jackson 5 era to the Bad World Tour.
