As a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, Perry has spent the past few decades crafting era-defining hits for artists like Christina Aguilera, Pink, and Gwen Stefani. But one of her biggest songs, Pink's explosive 2001 anthem "Get the Party Started," nearly went unnoticed by the singer who turned it into a career-defining hit.
During his appearance on the show Go with Elmo Lovano Perry revealed that the track was originally just a "joke" - and was even rejected by another superstar before landing in Pink's hands.

At the time, Perry said she was experimenting with unfamiliar instruments to create pop music after years of working as a so-called "analog girl.".
Intrigued by the glossy sound dominating the radio, she bought new equipment and began collecting beats and samples in her studio, but what followed surprised even her.
«"Just think of every cliché you can think of," Perry said, recalling the spontaneous writing process of "Get the Party Started." As the track came together, she realized she might have stumbled onto something truly special.
«"I'm just laughing and thinking, 'Wow! I just wrote a dance hit,'" she told host Elmo Lovano. "I'm amazed at how brilliant I am in my stupidity." Even then, Perry viewed the song more as an experiment than something anyone could use.

However, before Pink heard the song, Perry first tried to pitch it to Madonna after spotting the pop icon at a club. She recalls boldly approaching the singer, who performed the hit "Material Girl," and asking, "Do you believe in seizing opportunities?" to which the Queen of Pop replied, "Of course.".
Perry recalled being thrilled by the interaction, but the excitement was short-lived after she sent the song to Madonna's manager, Guy Oseary, who she says told her bluntly, "This isn't for Madonna.".
Shortly after Madonna's rejection, Perry met a young Pink, who called the respected songwriter and producer after getting her number from a mutual friend. Pink, who only gave her first name, was just preparing her next album and was eager to work with Perry.
Although Perry initially dismissed the conversation, she later called Pink back after seeing her on MTV.
When they met, Perry decided to let her hear the unusual song, which eventually became "Get the Party Started"—the hit that propelled Pink to new levels of fame and changed the trajectory of her career.
