A day after dozens of dolphins stranded on Cape Cod, rescue crews resumed work along the Massachusetts coast, successfully bringing 19 more animals back to shore before the situation worsened.
These two rescue operations, carried out back-to-back, highlight both the vulnerability of marine life in coastal areas and the importance of having trained professionals ready to respond to emergency situations.
What's happened?
By late Tuesday morning, 19 bottlenose dolphins stranded between Brewster and Wellfleet had returned to the water. Radio station 95.1 WXTK reported that the animals were found in three locations along a nine-mile stretch, and rescuers recovered all of them with the incoming tide.
The dolphins were found to be in satisfactory condition, according to radio station 95.1 WXTK, citing the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
Tuesday's rescue operations followed an even larger dolphin stranding the day before. On July 13, radio station 95.1 WXTK reported that 34 dolphins were found in Brewster, between First Light Beach and Ellis Landing Beach.
Over the course of two days, rescuers provided assistance to 53 stranded dolphins.
