Michelle Pfeiffer explains why she almost backed out of her first date with her now-husband David E. Kelley at the last minute (exclusive).

Michelle Pfeiffer almost missed out on a life-changing relationship.

During the event Madison On May 30, the famous actress told PEOPLE about the blind date that led to her meeting her current husband, David E. Kelley, admitting she almost canceled the meeting moments before leaving the house.

«"I kind of swore off blind dates, but it was a blind date," explains 68-year-old Pfeiffer. "At the very last minute, I found out that my best friend, who actually set up the date, had never met him. So, it was literally right before I was about to leave. I thought, 'I'm not going.'".

Luckily, Pfeiffer decided to give the date a chance, but instead of going alone, she previously admitted she opted for a "group date" rather than a one-on-one meeting.

The meeting took place at Chez Jay restaurant in Santa Monica in January 1993, though the evening didn't quite go as one might expect for a future Hollywood couple. Looking back, Pfeiffer admits that neither she nor Kelly spoke much during their first meeting.

Although their conversation was brief, their mutual understanding was enough to start a relationship that quickly developed into something more serious.

At the time, Pfeiffer, who was married to Peter Horton from 1981 to 1988, was already starting a family. Even before meeting Kelly, the three-time Oscar nominee had begun private adoption proceedings and gave birth to a daughter, Claudia Rose, in March 1993.

Later that year, on November 13, 1993, Pfeiffer and Kelly, a renowned television writer and producer, married. Less than a year after their wedding, their family grew with the birth of a son, John Henry.

Fast forward to today, and the parents of two have maintained one of the longest-lasting marriages in Hollywood.

Pfeiffer has often spoken about the qualities that have strengthened their relationship over the years.

In a 2012 interview with Parade magazine, Pfeiffer reflected on her marriage and the deep respect she has for her husband.

«"I'm very lucky," she told the publication. "I never take him for granted. I've never met a man with more integrity than my husband. I respect that. He also has a sense of humor and intelligence, and he's very personable—all those qualities—but if you don't respect your partner, you'll get tired of him.".
