McConnell's latest hospitalization comes nearly two years after he collapsed during a lunch with Senate Republicans.

Shortly after the presidency fell, a McConnell spokesman tried to allay concerns in a statement.

The senator was attending a private dinner at a Washington hotel when he fell and suffered a concussion and a broken rib. The injuries forced him to take nearly six weeks off from Senate duties while he recovered.
That same year, McConnell also fell twice: once during a trip to Helsinki, Finland, and again while disembarking a plane at Ronald Reagan Airport in Washington, D.C. Some of his falls are attributed to the lingering effects of polio, which he contracted as a child in 1944. The disease paralyzed his left leg and caused significant financial loss to his parents at the time.
McConnell was hospitalized in 2025 as a precaution.
In addition to falls and the lingering effects of polio, McConnell has faced a number of other health problems over the years.
In 2003, he underwent triple heart bypass surgery after a cardiac examination revealed blocked arteries.
Most recently, in February 2025, McConnell checked himself into a hospital after experiencing "flu-like symptoms." This step was described as a precautionary measure to prevent the development of more serious health problems.
He was discharged from the hospital within a week and later resumed his duties, although he briefly withdrew from personal attendance at Senate meetings during his recovery.
«"He is feeling better and will work from home this week on the advice of his doctors," the spokesperson said, according to Politico.
Mitch McConnell will not run for re-election in 2026.
McConnell, currently 84, has represented Kentucky in the U.S. Senate since January 3, 1985. His long tenure has made him the longest-serving senator in Kentucky history and one of the oldest members of the chamber currently in office.
However, his current term will be his last. Earlier in 2025, McConnell announced he would not seek reelection in 2026, thus ending a Senate career that would have spanned more than four decades by the time he leaves office in January 2027.
«"Seven times my fellow Kentuckians have elected me to the Senate. Every day between those elections, I have been humbled by the trust they have placed in me to lead their affairs here in Kentucky," McConnell told his fellow senators in a public statement.
«"Representing our state has been the honor of my life. I will not seek this honor for an eighth time. My current term in the Senate will be my last," the octogenarian added.
