The third and final season of Netflix's sci-fi alternative to Game of Thrones is in production. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss created Game of Thrones for eight seasons on HBO, but after the series concluded, they moved to Netflix for their next project. That project is an equally ambitious book adaptation, this time of Liu Cixin's The Three-Body Problem.
The first season of 3 Body Problem premiered on Netflix in 2024, leaving Benioff, Weiss, and co-showrunner Alexander Wu with a long wait to complete their television adaptation of Liu Jiaoping's Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy. Netflix has renewed 3 Body Problem for a second and third season to complete the adaptation, and filming for the third season has officially begun.
What's on Netflix reported that filming for Season 3 had begun after photos of the cast on set in Camber Sands, England, surfaced. After filming the entire first of three seasons of Body Problem in the UK, production for Season 2 moved to Europe, beginning in November 2025 and wrapping up there. Now, it appears Season 3 will once again be filmed in the UK, at least partly, with production likely returning to its headquarters in Hungary soon.
«"Body Trouble" is a sci-fi detective thriller about a group of scientists who establish contact with the San-Ti, an alien civilization that threatens humanity. While not as politically charged or fantastical as "Game of Thrones," the series shares similarities with Benioff and Weiss's previous project thanks to its stellar cast, epic scale, and shared themes of humanity's division and unification in the face of existential threats.
Netflix renewed Body Issues for seasons 2 and 3 simultaneously, so it's no surprise that filming is proceeding back-to-back. While the first season wasn't a faithful adaptation of the first book, the remaining two seasons are set to cover stories from "The Dark Forest" (Book 2) and "Death's End" (Book 3).
Netflix hasn't yet announced a premiere date for the second season of Body Issues, though it's likely to premiere in 2026. Since season three is already underway, the break between the next two seasons shouldn't be as significant as between seasons one and two.
What to expect from season 3 of Body Issues on Netflix?
The series "3 Body Problem" hasn't yet resolved the controversial ending of the first season or set the stage for a third season, so things will become clearer when the second season airs later this year. However, those who have read the books have a good idea of what awaits them. The last two books depict humanity's preparation for the arrival of San-Ti 400 years from now, with numerous time jumps and various intrigues.
Set photos published by What's on Netflix revealed the cast for Season 3, including Jess Hong as Jean, one of the lead scientists preparing Earth for San-Ti's invasion, and Marlo Kelly as Tatiana, San-Ti's loyal follower on Earth. Also spotted on set was Shimooka, reprising her role as Sophon, the physical embodiment of the intelligence program that helps San-Ti communicate with Earth's inhabitants.
This confirms the survival of at least three characters from the events of Season 2's "Body Issues." Sophon's return also suggests the series may return to the virtual reality simulation from Season 1, which the San-Ti used to test Earth's greatest scientific minds, including Jin.
3 Body Problem star Jovan Adepo has hinted that the second season of the sci-fi show will be «"more personal", This should allay many of the criticisms leveled at the first season, which focused heavily on science. Like the final seasons of Game of Thrones, the second and third seasons of 3 Body Problem will have fewer episodes, but hopefully, it will still be enough for Benioff and Weiss to complete their ambitious book adaptation.
