MS NOW host Rachel Maddow took viewers on Monday night (June 1) through Donald Trump's history of failed celebrations amid the recent controversy surrounding the president's 250th Anniversary of Freedom concert.
«"The country's 250th anniversary celebrations are set to begin this month," the presenter said on Monday's program. «The Rachel Maddow Show» . "And I know you've heard about how Trump ruined the planned 250th anniversary celebrations in Washington.".
Maddow then outlined some of the planned events, including a UFC cage fight on the White House lawn. "Sponsored by what many government gambling regulators consider illegal gambling activities," she added, referring to the cryptocurrency casino and sports betting platform Stake.
«"Trump also decided to hold a car race on the streets of Washington," Maddow continued, referring to the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, an IndyCar street race. She noted that "someone had the brilliant idea" to release an official T-shirt with the slogan "One Nation, One Race." The T-shirt was later removed from the website "because they couldn't explain it properly.".
She then turned her attention to the disastrous Freedom 250 concert, saying: "Trump called for the cancellation of a concert he tried to plan in Washington for the 250th anniversary after, again, a group of celebrities and former celebrities they thought they had persuaded to perform... started backing out.".
«"Trump was humiliated by this for obvious reasons, so now he's called for the entire event to be canceled and announced that he should be the headliner himself," Maddow added. "So, okay, that'll be great.".
On Saturday (May 30), the president spoke at a Truth Social event after artists like Young MC, the Commodores, Morris Day of Morris Day and The Time, Martina McBride, and Bret Michaels declined to appear. Trump offered to "take the place of these high-paid, third-rate 'entertainers' and give a big speech.".
«"You know, that's kind of the way it is with Trump," Maddow said, recalling his first inauguration, which she described as "poorly organized," "poorly attended," and "unfortunately, pretty unimpressive in terms of the star cast.".
«"The atmosphere was like a cheap wedding DJ and a sloppy junior high marching band," she continued. "I mean, even for Trump, I think it was a bit of a relief when his second inauguration came around and had to be moved indoors due to bad weather.".
She also mocked the right-wing alternative Super Bowl halftime show, where "Kid Rock somehow lost the thread while trying to lip-sync and gave up halfway through.".
«"Trump just doesn't know how to do this," Maddow concluded.
