Steering rack repair involves a series of steps involving diagnostics, repair of repairable parts, and replacement of damaged parts. These procedures require specialized knowledge and skills to ensure high-quality repairs and prevent further damage. If you lack the necessary information or equipment, you should contact a professional.

Troubleshooting the steering gear
The steering rack has three main components: the toothed shaft, the support sleeve, and the spool valve. For diagnostics, it is necessary to inspect each component of the rack to determine the nature and extent of repair work. The first sign of a malfunction, which a car owner can easily identify, is a knocking noise in the rack, clearly felt through the steering wheel. This defect occurs when driving over uneven roads and indicates wear on the toothed shaft or the support sleeves. Steering gear problems can also be indicated by free play in the steering wheel. This is caused by worn worm gear teeth or the distributor shaft. Furthermore, the steering wheel should rotate smoothly and turn easily in both directions without noise or grinding. If this does not happen, the rack is corroded or there is a problem with the worm gear teeth.
External signs of powertrain malfunction also include oil leakage and a lack of fluid in the reservoir. In this case, it's necessary to inspect the dust boots—the protective elements of the rack hinge joints. The dust boots are made of corrugated rubber and, during operation, can crack, leading to a rupture of the protective cover. This allows water and dust to enter the hinge joints, causing corrosion of the mechanism. If corrosion has progressed, failure of individual components is inevitable.
Features of power unit repair
Before beginning the repair itself, several conditions must be considered. First, steering rack repairs must be performed in good lighting. Special tools and equipment are essential, allowing for easy disassembly and reassembly of the steering mechanism, avoiding accidental damage to serviceable components. Professional diagnostics involve examining the steering rack using a specialized test bench, which can display the system's operation under increased load. The main advantage of this test bench is that it allows testing the steering rack without installing it on the vehicle.
It's worth noting that repairing a steering rack will most likely require a repair kit—a set of parts that wear out faster than others. This includes rubber seals (oil seals), support bushings, and hydraulic barrier and rubber sealing rings. The only differences between repairs with and without power steering are the composition of the lubricating fluid and the appearance of the bushings. The repair sequence itself is the same.
Troubleshooting the steering rack
Steering rack repair is carried out in stages:
- 1. removing the rack from the car and its subsequent disassembly;
- 2. washing and cleaning parts from accumulations (dirt, oil);
- 3. restoration of usable parts and replacement of deformed ones;
- 4. Assembly of the steering rack and installation on the car.
To dismantle the mechanism, it is necessary to remove the engine guard (if present) and the rack heat-insulating plate. Then, unscrew the fasteners, remove the power unit from its mountings, and remove it from the vehicle. It is advisable to include the steering rods during this process, as it is easier to pull the boots onto the rod ends during repair, which also ensures a perfect seal. Disassembling the device involves disconnecting each component from the overall mechanism.
After disassembly and cleaning, the parts are thoroughly inspected for suitability for further use. Those rack components that show signs of extreme wear must be replaced. These often include shaft bushings, worm gears, and seals. Typically, if the corrosion is minor, the part can be restored.
Particular attention should be paid to inspecting the steering gear housing for wear. After replacing defective parts and all rubber components, assembly and installation can begin. The long-term reliability of the powertrain depends on the quality of each repair. The steering rack must be completely replaced if there is significant damage to its surface or the pinion shaft.
