In a new podcast interview IMO Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson (see below), the director says the lead role—which helped make Harrison Ford an icon thanks to the film's release—was «Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark» in 1981 - Tom Selleck was originally supposed to play him.

«"George and I interviewed and auditioned for the role of Indiana Jones," Spielberg said on the podcast. "That was the deciding factor. We both agreed that Tom Selleck should play Indiana Jones. He came in, auditioned, and it went well. I really liked it.".

Spielberg confirmed that he "wouldn't have let him wear a mustache" if he had ended up getting the role, and that's where "the threads of fate didn't cross with Tom" in the end.

Shortly after the search for an actor to play Indy began, production on the television series began, further preventing Selleck from joining the film.

«"I said, 'George, what about the guy who plays Han Solo for Indiana Jones?'" the director said. "George looked at me weirdly and said, 'That's Han Solo.'".

Spielberg recalled advising Lucas that the actor "could play more than one role," and a week later Lucas told him he had sent the script "« Indiana Jones and the Seekers The Lost Ark" to Ford, who liked it so much that he decided to make a film.
