Universal Pictures has released the final trailer for Discovery Day, Steven Spielberg's first science fiction film since «War of the Worlds» 2005 and his first directorial work after «Fabelmanov» 2022.
The film hits theaters and IMAX on June 12, and this final trailer is the most complete look yet at what Spielberg has been cooking up.
What does the final trailer for Disclosure Day really reveal?
The plot centers on Daniel Kellner, played by Josh O'Connor, a fugitive from justice after stealing classified government intelligence on extraterrestrial life. Emily Blunt plays Margaret Fairchild, a Kansas City weather anchor who, without explanation, begins speaking an alien language while delivering a weather report.
The trailer reveals that Daniel and Margaret share a mysterious childhood connection, hinting that they may have both been subjects of alien experiments at some point. Colin Firth plays a government official who attempts to conceal the truth using advanced telepathic technology, fearing global chaos if the secret is revealed.

The final shot shows both main characters making contact with aliens—first as children and then as adults. We also see crop circles, references to Area 51, allusions to Roswell, and unnatural animal behavior: deer, cardinals, goats, and raccoons stare directly at the people on screen.
Finally, the aliens themselves appear on screen, and their faces are strikingly similar to the creatures from Spielberg's film. «Close Encounters of the Third Kind» .
The most striking thing about this trailer is Spielberg himself.

What makes this trailer special is that Spielberg himself gets in front of the camera and talks about how his belief in extraterrestrial life has truly changed since he made Close Encounters of the Third Kind nearly five decades ago. He says it bluntly: «"I'm much more inclined now than I was when I was filming Close Encounters of the Third Kind to believe that we're not the only intelligent civilization in the universe.".
He goes even further, uttering a line that gives the entire film added weight: «"I used to say to myself: how wonderful it would be if all this were true. And now I think: how wonderful it would be if people knew that all this was true.".
The timing of this film's release seems almost perfect.

The US government recently declassified UFO documents and Navy pilot videos that remain completely unexplained. Spielberg openly stated that this cultural and political moment directly inspired him to create the film. The official synopsis also explicitly states: "The truth belongs to seven billion people." This phrase sounds very different in 2026 than it did ten years ago.
Interestingly, the entire third act of the film, "Disclosure Day," was omitted from all promotional materials, so what you see in this trailer is only part of the story.
