After years of fan clamor for a return to the Stargate universe, the long-awaited revival of the series suddenly faced insurmountable obstacles.
Amazon will reportedly not proceed with the new Stargate series.
In November 2025, Amazon ordered the series, with Martin Gero serving as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. A Stargate veteran, Gero has previously written or co-created over 40 episodes of the franchise, including several episodes «Stargate SG-1» (1997-2007) and «Stargate Atlantis» (2004-2009) at the beginning of his career.
Why the project stalled and what lies ahead
According to a source familiar with the situation, Amazon executives were concerned that a version of the series featuring Gero would not appeal to many people outside the existing Stargate fan base.
However, the tech giant appears determined to keep the franchise alive. The company has shown interest in developing new projects since acquiring MGM Studios in 2022 and is still exploring other ways to continue the franchise, despite the cancellation of the Gero series.
It's worth noting that Gero remains with Amazon MGM Studios under his overall contract with the company and will continue to work on other projects there.
No plot details for Gero's version of the series have been released. The project involved a fairly large production team, including Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures , as well as Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who co-wrote and directed the original 1994 film. Longtime franchise alums Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi served as consulting producers.
The Stargate series« began in 1994 with a feature-length film starring James Spader (as Daniel Jackson) and Kurt Russell (as Jack O'Neill). It later spawned a long-running television series. «Stargate SG-1» , which aired for ten seasons, and «Stargate Atlantis» , which ran for five seasons.
Over the years, there have also been several direct-to-video films and several other series, the most recent of which is a prequel web series. «Stargate Origins» (2018).
While Hero's version will never see the light of day, it's safe to assume that Amazon's continued interest indicates that the iconic sci-fi saga may return in another form.
