Martin Gero's Stargate series will not be moving forward with Amazon.

The Stargate series« became one of the main victims of the management change at Amazon MGM Studios. The reboot of the popular MGM franchise from a veteran «Stargate» Martin Gero, who received a series order from Prime Video in November 2025, will not happen, Deadline has confirmed.

The decision to cancel the series was made late in the process—I heard the script was finished after 20 weeks and was in pre-production in the UK. This was explained by the fact that the series' new vision and creative direction, allegedly, no longer aligned with Amazon's programming strategy.

The disagreements were apparently so deep that they required the project's complete cancellation, rather than a rewrite with input from Gero, a veteran showrunner with whom Amazon MGM Studios has an overall deal to helm the show. the Stargate project.

Ironically, the new Stargate series« was approved by Peter Friedlander, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, and it was one of his first project-launching decisions since joining the streaming service in early October. However, the series is being overseen by one of Friedlander's top lieutenants, Brett Fetter, head of worldbuilding and genre series, who only joined Amazon in February.

Two executives who developed and promoted the series together with Gero «Stargate» , Nick Pepper, previously head of U.S. TV and SVOD development (Whole Owned), and Matt King, previously head of blockbuster, genre, and universe development (Whole Owned), have both left—the former when Fetter joined, and the latter two months later when Fetter reorganized his team.

«Stargate» were among the first MGM projects to be considered for adaptation as a series or film following Amazon's $8.5 billion acquisition of the storied Hollywood studio in 2022. Rumors suggest the studio may return to the franchise with a different showrunner, perhaps someone new to the franchise who could bring a fresh perspective.

Meanwhile, Gero, who worked on the three previous series «Stargate» and created the NBC series "Blindspot", will focus on developing new projects under its overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

«Stargate» is a science fiction, military, and historical franchise centered on the Stargate, an ancient ring-shaped device that creates a stable wormhole, allowing for near-instantaneous travel through space.

A franchise originally launched by Roland Emmerich's feature film «Stargate» 1994, has expanded over three decades to include numerous television series such as «Stargate SG-1» (1997-2007), «Stargate Atlantis» (2004-2009) and «Stargate Universe » (2009-2011). Other series include the animated series «Stargate Infinity » (2002-2003) and web series «Stargate Origins» (2018).

Gero served as creator, writer, and executive producer of the reboot. Also serving as executive producers were Joby Harold and Tori Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures, as well as Dean Devlin and Emmerich, the duo behind the film. «Stargate» 1994. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, longtime creative leaders of the television universe «Stargate» , acted as consultant producers.

On the series' closure «Stargate »" Variety first reported.
