The controversy erupted not because of the photo itself, but because of the caption, which Molen later deleted. It read: "Your eldest son will be the most toxic guy you'll ever date.".
After the post and her taste began to be criticized, the 47-year-old best-selling author New York Times stood up for herself, declaring: «I stand by my opinion!»
The scandal continued unabated. Reactions ranged from claims that the photos "showed a mother being affectionate with her child" to accusations that they were "creepy and completely inappropriate.".
Mollen also attributed the backlash to her status as a single woman. "Because I'm separating from my husband, because the institution of marriage doesn't protect me, I'm suddenly becoming a target for criticism in my posts," she wrote.
During the show, Goldberg said she didn't understand the photos themselves or anything else that happened around them. "So I'll just leave it up to you to decide," she said.
Among the other co-hosts, Sara Haines defended the caption, calling it typical of Mollen's style. Sunny Hostin, the boy's mother, asked: « If it were a mother hugging her daughter, would the reaction be the same?»
