Ted Danson recalls one of the most controversial moments of his career when he ridiculed Whoopi Goldberg — with whom he had an affair — in makeup imitating a dark-skinned person.

Danson said he knew Bell was referring to the negative press reaction to his October 1993 performance after he wore makeup to imitate a black man at a comedy show at the Friars Club in honor of Goldberg, who was 70.

Because Danson and Goldberg were receiving extremely negative press at the time due to their interracial relationship, the actor said he "didn't realize" that his comedic roles were getting "darker and darker, or angrier inside of me.".
Danson said using racial slurs to describe their affair was "arrogant" and "stupid.".
«"I showed it to Whoopi and everyone else, and maybe she just didn't want to stifle my creativity," he said. "By the way, I'd been working on it for months. And in 20 seconds, it was like I'd stuck my finger in a power outlet.".
Danson claimed his offensive joke quickly "flew out of the room" and instantly made headlines. The actor has since apologized and acknowledged how damaging his actions were, even if he didn't intend to cause harm.
In October 1995, Danson married actress Mary Steenburgen , and they've been together ever since.
