ImGist - I Am the Essence

Here's why the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday is taking so long to come out.

The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday is increasingly being delayed online, testing the patience of fans who have been waiting to see the full version for over a month. This December, Marvel Studios will unite the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men in a live-action film for the first time, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the franchise as the villain Victor von Doom, not Iron Man. The studio showed the full trailer to a closed audience back in early spring, but everyone else has been making do with written descriptions of what was shown onscreen.

In April, at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, an event where studios pitch their films to theater owners, Marvel showed the first full trailer for Avengers: Judgment Day behind closed doors. The general public never saw it. Detailed sneak peeks of the footage appeared within hours, but the trailer itself remained unavailable. Given the already high anticipation, this silence seems deliberate, and several obvious reasons explain the delay in the online release.

Why is Marvel Studios taking so long to release the Avengers: Doomsday trailer online?

Marvel has a relatively new template for this kind of restraint, and it's worked quite well. The first trailer for Avengers: Endgame dropped on December 7, 2018, just under five months before the film's April 26, 2019, premiere. This window of time was remarkably short by blockbuster standards, and the footage revealed almost nothing about the plot. Nevertheless, fans appreciated this restraint. The trailer garnered 289 million views in 24 hours, the most of any trailer to date.

The delay in releasing the Avengers: Doomsday trailer may be due to the same logic. The film premieres on December 18, and Marvel typically releases the first full trailer for an Avengers film 140-200 days before its release. A summer premiere would definitely fall within this range. The shorter time frame between the trailer and the premiere maintains anticipation until the film's release.

Another reason could be Spider-Man: New Day, which opens on July 31st. The film is currently in the midst of its own marketing campaign, with some challenges, of course. Tom Holland unveiled the first trailer in March from the top of the Empire State Building, and fans posted snippets of it on social media within a single morning. Rumors suggest a second trailer is expected around the end of June.

Sony Pictures is marketing the Spider-Man films, and the studio needs time to bring Peter Parker back before attention shifts to Avengers: Doomsday. Two massive Marvel campaigns competing for the same success won't help either film. A trailer timed to coincide with the release of New Day could even boost the popularity of both, but Marvel benefits from the fact that Holland's film is currently the center of attention.

Perhaps the most obvious reason is that Marvel is returning to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con this year for the first time since 2024. The studio's panel will take its traditional Saturday evening slot on July 25, just under five months before the release of Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel skipped the convention in 2025 while the film was still filming in London, so this will be its first major Comic-Con appearance since Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom made a splash in 2024.

San Diego has long served as the setting for Marvel's biggest surprises, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige openly admits that the studio plans its filming schedule around the event. Speaking to Deadline, he once described how Marvel "« literally builds his filming schedules based on what we could show at Comic-Con. ». Premiering the Avengers: Doomsday trailer in Hall H in front of thousands of fans and viewers from around the world would give the video the best possible start.

What will the Avengers: Doomsday trailer show fans when it finally comes out?

Marvel is treating the Avengers: Doomsday trailer as the launch of its biggest event in years, and for good reason. Kevin Feige stated at CinemaCon that the film picks up where Avengers: Endgame left off, indicating a similarly ambitious plot. Fans can expect a darker tone than recent Marvel films, with Doctor Doom's threat looming large across the Multiverse.

Doctor Doom has generated a lot of hype, and judging by the footage released, the villain lives up to expectations. Robert Downey Jr. voices the villain with an accent completely unlike Tony Stark's, and in the trailer, he emerges as a truly unique antagonist. He even stops a powerful blow from Thor's Stormbreaker with two fingers, an early indication that no hero stands a chance against him. His armor looks straight out of the comics, giving longtime fans cause for excitement even before the film's release.

The trailer also promises the crossover moments fans have been dreaming about for years. Characters who have never crossed paths before will finally collide, and mutants from old Fox films will stand alongside the current lineup. Just the sight of Gambit battling Shang-Chi hints at just how wild these fights will be.
