Fuel consumption per 100 km is one of the most important metrics in a car, as many people buy a particular model based on this data. Most manufacturers pay close attention to this metric, and it's these companies that top our rankings.
1. Citroen C3
The small French hatchback Citroën C3, with a 1.6-liter engine, went on sale in 2017. It produces 75 horsepower. In this configuration, the car consumes only 3.1 liters of fuel. Naturally, it is paired exclusively with a manual transmission, which has five modes. The model's top speed is 171 km/h, and 0-62 mph (100 km/h) takes just over fifteen seconds.
Previous generations of this model also boasted low fuel consumption, not only for the diesel engines but also for the gasoline ones. For example, the 2013 version with a 1-liter engine achieved fuel consumption of just 4.2 liters, which is quite good for a fairly powerful family car.
2. Seat Leon
A creation of the Spanish automotive industry, specifically the Seat Leon, released in 2012. This car is also a hatchback. It is equipped with a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, capable of producing up to 90 horsepower. Like most fuel-efficient cars, it uses a five-speed manual transmission. And the key stat is 3.0 liters per hundred kilometers in mixed driving. Moreover, the model can easily be called sporty, as it can reach a top speed of 191 kilometers per hour and accelerate to 60 in just 10 seconds.
Its appearance is also too aggressive, not befitting a family car. This variant is also well-equipped inside, which helps the Leon easily compete in Europe with many other creations from more reputable companies.
3. Ford Fiesta
Another hatchback, this time from overseas, is the Ford Fiesta. The most fuel-efficient version is the sixth-generation facelift, with a 1.6-liter engine producing 95 horsepower. It's controlled by a five-speed manual transmission identical to previous models. This diesel car consumes just 2.9 liters of fuel.
It's also on par with many gasoline-powered models in terms of speed. Top speed is limited to 180 kilometers per hour, and you can reach 100 kilometers per hour in 11.6 seconds. This model is typically chosen for city driving, as it's equipped with a wide range of features and functions that improve comfort and safety. The car also handles well, as many users like to point out in their reviews. But everyone loves it, of course, because of its low fuel consumption.
4. Skoda Octavia
The next spot goes to one of the oldest models – the Skoda Octavia Greenline. The model dates back to 1959, but the latest 2017 generation has made it into this ranking. Again, it's equipped with a 1.6-liter engine, but with a higher horsepower output than its competitors – 110. Incidentally, this is the only non-hatchback on the list, so towing such a massive car requires a lot of fuel… but no, it consumes only 2.8 liters of fuel per 100 km.
The car is also one of the most environmentally friendly, with low carbon dioxide emissions. To reduce fuel consumption, the designers implemented numerous additional modifications, such as special low-drag tires, a start-stop function, and more. The car also excels in its impressive speed. It can reach 200 kilometers per hour, reaching 100 in 10.4 seconds.
5. Renault Clio
The Renault Clio has the best fuel economy in the city, but only sixth in combined driving. As usual, the ranking includes the latest model, which went on sale in 2016. It features a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 75 horsepower. It's mated to a standard five-speed manual transmission. Its fuel consumption is 3.4 liters per 100 km in the city and 2.7 liters per 100 km in combined driving.
The car doesn't boast impressive performance figures, as the designers didn't prioritize them. Their primary goal was to create a version that anyone could afford. And they succeeded, as the car is extremely popular in many countries around the world. At the same time, the model is beautifully designed both externally and internally, and its trunk space is ample for anyone.
6. Kia Rio CRDi
The second half of the list opens with the only representative of the Eastern market – the Kia Rio CRDi. This version's engine displacement is only 1.1 liters, but it produces a whopping 75 horsepower. As for the transmission, it uses a six-speed manual. While the car doesn't boast impressive performance, it does offer a high level of comfort, though you'll have to pay a little extra for it, as the base model doesn't even have air conditioning. But for a small extra cost, you get the ideal vehicle for city trips and travel, as the trunk is quite roomy, and removing the rear seats increases its capacity almost fourfold.
And the most interesting stat: the model consumes 3.6 liters of fuel in the city, but the average fuel consumption is 2.6 liters. It's a great option for those who want a stylish car with low maintenance costs.
7. Volkswagen Golf
Surprisingly, the next position is occupied by one of the most famous cars – the Volkswagen Golf. A special version of this model, the BlueMotion, was developed specifically to compete with all other models in terms of fuel economy. This modification is now the seventh generation of the famous car. It is equipped with a 1.4-liter turbodiesel engine producing a whopping 125 horsepower.
In addition to excellent handling, a high level of comfort, and low fuel consumption, buyers will also enjoy excellent acceleration. Few fuel-efficient cars can boast reaching 60 mph in just 9.5 seconds. The transmission is also a six-speed manual.
According to the specifications, the engine consumes 2.6 liters of fuel in normal driving conditions. However, this model is significantly more expensive than other competitors, so it will take twice as long to recoup the cost in fuel economy savings.
8. Vauxhall Corsa
The British Vauxhall Corsa. It can easily be called a compact car, as its engine displaces only 1.3 liters. This unit can produce 75 horsepower. The model is not at all aimed at high speeds, but its comfort level is simply off the charts. This vehicle was created for people who need a car only for driving, not for any kind of show-off.
It's reliable and roomy, despite its rather compact dimensions. The rear seats comfortably accommodate three adults, and none of them will experience discomfort. However, the car isn't widely sold internationally and is only used extensively in the British Isles. It's extremely rare to see it in other countries. This trim level consumes 2.6 liters of fuel per 100 km.
9. Peugeot 307
Another French car, the second-generation Peugeot 307, narrowly missed out on the lead. Surprisingly, it also lost to its compatriot. This car is equipped with a 1.6-liter engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission. All together, it delivers up to 92 horsepower. While this model doesn't particularly excel in terms of speed, its equipment is far ahead of many of its competitors.
For a relatively low price, you'll get virtually everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable ride in any conditions. There will never be any extraneous noise, nothing will break down, and everything will always start the first time. Although the car is small, its spaciousness is impressive. It can be expanded by removing the rear seats. Almost anyone can maintain this model, as it consumes only 2.5 liters of diesel fuel.
10. Peugeot 208
Another Peugeot, this time the 208, rightfully earned the title of "Most Fuel-Efficient Car." It's equipped with a 1.6-liter engine, producing less power than the previous contender—75 horsepower—but boasting significantly better performance. This version is also equipped with a five-speed manual transmission, rather than a six-speed one. This is due to the model's smaller dimensions.
But the most important thing here is the fuel consumption. To prove and verify just how low it is, a special test was conducted. The car's tank was filled with 43 liters of diesel fuel. With this amount, the car was able to travel just over 2,000 kilometers. Ultimately, the experiment revealed that this car consumes only 2 liters of fuel for every 100 kilometers. Furthermore, it achieved excellent environmental performance, emitting 79 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. Of all the options on this list, this one has the lowest value.
The model wasn't short on comfort either. The Peugeot 208 boasts virtually the same features as the 308, but at a significantly lower price. It's safe to say that in many respects, this car simply has no competitors among the mass-market cars, and it's unlikely to have any in the near future.
11. Smart Fortwo
The new Smart hatchbacks aren't just fashionable, attractive, and modern, they're also fuel-efficient. This city-friendly model, powered by a 1.0-liter gasoline engine, gets a measly 4.2 liters per 100 kilometers (4.2 liters per 100 km), despite producing 71 horsepower. A diesel version of this compact car, the CDI, is also available, considered Britain's leanest car. 12. Volkswagen Polo
For those looking for the most fuel-efficient car, Volkswagen offers the Polo with a TSI engine—a turbocharged gasoline engine with direct fuel injection. The car produces 90 horsepower and displaces 1.2 liters. In the combined cycle, the hatchback consumes 4.7 liters per 100 km. As for the diesel version, Volkswagen also offers a Polo with a 1.4-liter TDI diesel engine producing 75 hp. It consumes just 3.4 l/100 km.
13. Skoda Fabia
If for some reason the Volkswagen Polo isn't your cup of tea, there's an alternative that retains all the Polo's advantages, but with its own distinct character and design. Last year, Škoda announced it was moving beyond its traditional budget segment and began adding a touch of flair to its models. For example, the new generation Škoda Fabia now features elegantly trimmed headlights and taillights in a Bohemian glass style. At the same time, the car is built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Polo. Under the hood is the same 1.2-liter TSI engine, but with 88 hp. Combined fuel consumption is identical—4.7 l/100 km.
14.Hyundai i20
The new Hyundai i20, which replaced the popular Getz, also made it into the ranking of the most fuel-efficient cars in Ukraine. While the car offers a wide range of powertrains, the hatchback's diesel version deserves special mention, featuring a 1.4-liter CRDi engine. It produces 90 horsepower and achieves a fuel consumption of 4.3 liters per 100 km.
15. Skoda Rapid
As a direct relative of the Volkswagen Polo Sedan, the Skoda Rapid, which has established itself quite well in the Ukrainian market, also impressed with its fuel efficiency. The diesel version, with the same 1.6-liter TDI engine producing 103 hp, boasts a claimed fuel consumption of 4.4 liters per 100 km. Moreover, during AUTO.RIA's test drive, fuel consumption never exceeded 5.0 l/100 km.
16. Renault Logan
The hard-working Renault Logan ranks last in our ranking, yet its fuel consumption figures are no less impressive. Once again, the diesel version deserves special mention. While gasoline versions consume 6.2, 7.3, and even 8.1 liters of fuel in the combined cycle, the Logan uses only 4.5 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers driven on heavy fuel.
17. Citroen C1
One of the most fuel-efficient cars is the Citroën C1. Its fuel consumption in city traffic is five and a half liters. Despite being a French brand, these cars are assembled in the Czech Republic.
The Citroën C1's full tank holds 78 liters of fuel. The manufacturer recommends using A95 gasoline. This car comfortably seats four adults.
18. Honda Jazz
The next car in the ranking is the Honda Jazz. It's an excellent city car from a Japanese manufacturer. The average fuel consumption in the city is 5.1 liters. This is the figure reported by the manufacturers themselves.
A single full tank provides a comfortable range of 764 km. The car seats four, and the trunk has 883 liters of capacity. This model disproves the myth of weak compact cars. The Honda Jazz accelerates from 0 to 60 kilometers per hour in just 11.4 seconds.
19. Chevrolet Aveo
The Aveo is slightly larger in size than previous models. Fuel consumption is also slightly higher, at 6.6 liters per 100 kilometers. This car is designed for five people.
The trunk capacity is 501 liters. The car is more suited to younger people. The only drawback is poor sound insulation.
20. Toyota IQ
This car ranks first among city compact cars. With a one-liter engine, the average fuel consumption is 4.3 liters, and the minimum is only 3.9.
Its compact, thoughtful design makes this car stand out from the crowd in city traffic. A single tank provides a range of 740 km (450 mi). It accelerates from zero to 60 in 14.7 seconds. The Toyota iQ is not only among the most fuel-efficient cars, but also ranks first for its lowest carbon dioxide emissions.
21. KIA Soul 1.6 MPI
The KIA Soul, already familiar to many in the Russian market, consumes just 7.2 liters per 100 kilometers (31.5 mpg). The car features a new suspension and a 1.6 MPI gasoline engine. Despite producing 124 hp under the hood, this doesn't significantly impact fuel consumption. This efficiency is achieved thanks to the two-wheel drive transmission. The car's ground clearance is 158 cm (61.5 in), which is more than sufficient for light off-roading or driving over speed bumps. This car's price starts at 800,000 rubles.
22. Nissan Qashqai 1.2
Japanese manufacturers managed to combine a 1.2-liter engine with 112 horsepower and a fuel consumption of 6.2 liters per 100 kilometers. With a ground clearance of 200 mm, it's one of the most popular cars in this class. This crossover attracts not only with its appearance but also with its fairly affordable price. Prices for this car start at 800,000 rubles. The Nissan Qashqai also is included in the ranking of the most economical crossovers and occupies the fourth position.
23. Toyota Prius
This is one of the leading hybrid vehicles. Fuel consumption ranges from 5.5 to 8.0 liters per 100 km. In the standard version, the electric battery is charged by the engine and during braking. However, the new model now features the ability to charge from the mains and drive entirely on electric power. The trunk capacity is 443 liters. Most importantly, the car is completely silent while driving. Used prices start at 400,000 rubles.
24. BMW i3
Unlike most modern cars, the BMW i3 was developed from scratch. No existing car was used as a basis. Like the Toyota Prius, some versions of the BMW i3 can be plugged in. As for fuel, it uses just half a liter per 100 kilometers. A full tank provides a range of 322 kilometers. What's surprising about this car is that, despite its fuel efficiency, it has 170 horsepower and weighs 1,639 kg. The BMW i3 starts at two million.
25. Audi A3 1.6 TDI
This car has a 50-liter gas tank. Its fuel consumption is 5.2 liters per 100 kilometers (5.2 liters per 100 kilometers). Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 8.3 seconds. Production of this car began in 2012. Since then, thousands have been sold. The price of this car starts at 1.5 million.
26. Volvo V40 Cross Country
One of the best fuel-efficient family cars. Its appeal lies in its enhanced safety and reduced fuel consumption. This car is manufactured in Belgium. One tank is enough for 1,390 kilometers. With 120 horsepower, the car consumes 3.9 liters in the city. The more powerful 190 hp trim gets 6.4 liters. Price starts at 1.5 million.
