Euphoria's third season has been incredible, to say the least. After a five-year time jump, we meet our favorite group of teenagers now as adults: Rue Bennett (Zendaya), Cassie and Lexi Howard (Sydney Sweeney and Maude Apatow), Maddie Perez (Alexia Demie), and Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer), especially after the death of Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) in the penultimate episode of the season, "Rain or Shine." So what happens to Rue?
She's dying, and sadly, it seems preordained. After completing a mission for her dangerous boss, Alamo Brown (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), she's given a bottle of prescription painkillers, which, it turns out, are the cause of her long-standing addiction. Despite hallucinating a reunion with her mother, Leslie Bennett (Nika King), and a world where Fezco O'Neill (the late Angus Cloud) has escaped prison, Rue overdoses on the painkillers. Since Rue was staying with her mentor and friend, Ali (Colman Domingo), this happens on Ali's couch, and he seeks revenge for his fallen friend.
Ali achieves this by bringing a sawed-off shotgun to the Alamo Club, killing Alamo Lieutenant G (Marshawn Lynch), and screaming that he simply wants Alamo to pay for his crimes. He succeeds, in large part, because Alamo Lieutenant Bishop (Darrell Britt-Gibson) quietly empties Alamo's shotgun, leaving him defenseless. Afterward, he goes to the Texas estate where Rue had hoped to build a life with a religious family and prays with them, only to find Rue at the head of the table. "God bless us all," she says in voiceover, and the screen fades to black.

What will happen in the season 3 finale of Euphoria?

In the season three finale of Euphoria, we witness the conclusion of several characters' stories that we've followed since the first season premiered in 2019. Cassie, now an adult content creator on OnlyFans, quickly recovers from her husband's death and seems determined to turn her mansion into a home for content creators—and although she asks Lexie for help, Lexie seems more interested in browsing Rue's abandoned Bible. Maddie, having survived the Alamo Club massacre, returns home with a purse full of cash, thanks to Bishop. Jules, a kept woman thanks to her benefactor Ellis (Sam Trammell), seems to be painting a portrait of Rue in all her glory.
The ending of Euphoria was dark, dramatic, and frankly, over-the-top… but for Zendaya's Rue Bennett and Jacob Elordi's Nate Jacobs, the story finally came to an end. (At the time of this writing, we don't know if Euphoria will return for a fourth season.) Ultimately, it's a shame showrunner Sam Levinson wasn't interested in Zendaya's pitch for Rue's storyline. At least Ali got her revenge… and gave her some peace at the estate where she hoped to spend the rest of her days. Euphoria is available now on HBO Max.
