For Alessandro Sartori, it's the perfect setting for the golden hour, so it's no surprise that Zegna's artistic director chose a stunning backdrop in this particular style for his summer 2027 collection show, taking over Malibu Pier on Friday evening. It was a momentous occasion in many ways. Zegna typically presents its collections during Milan Fashion Week, and by moving the show west, it became a highlight for Los Angeles, the third major show in the city, following Hermès in Bel Air last night and Dior at LACMA last month.

A host of stylish Hollywood insiders flocked west for the event, including Oscar winners Rami Malek, Mahershala Ali, and Ludwig Goransson; actors Paul Dano, Stellan Skarsgård, Gael García Bernal, Henry Zaga, and Kaua Raymond; basketball stars Scottie Pippen, Kevin Love, and Dwight Powell; directors Roman Coppola and Andy Muschietti; artist Honor Titus; high-powered agents like CAA's Joel Lubin and Franklin Latt; and stylists Warren Alfie Baker, Janna Yang, Andrew Weitz, and Chase Dennis, among many others.
Hundreds of people gathered on the Malibu pier, offering not only ample space for spectators but also the opportunity to observe the unpaid extras—seals and surfers lined up to catch the tide and end the day. The only thing missing was the sun. After a brief appearance earlier in the day, the sun disappeared behind a cloudy sky, creating a gray backdrop. Sartori's summer collection compensated for this with vibrant colors, such as summery sets in yellow, green, and orange.
Even before the first ensemble hit the runway, Yan felt the glow. «Everyone who came here tonight lived through the devastation [of the Palisades fire], and it’s a reminder of what this community went through. The fact that Zegna and all these European fashion houses are supporting California means so much, because we need it. We need to recognize and support this community that has done so much for film and for the industry. Driving here, I couldn’t believe how many houses burned down. It’s so sad, but thank God someone is here to remember and commemorate. It’s wonderful to be here,» she said.
Ian stood next to photographer and culture-shifting figure Carlos Eric Lopez, sipping Aperol Spritz and enjoying the views. "I love that Zegna is embracing the beauty of California, especially Malibu. Summer is just around the corner, so our Instagram feeds will be filled with photos of people traveling to these exotic places. We Angelenos have summer all year round, so I'm thrilled to be on the pier with the surfers to my left. It's all iconic. It's dream, fantasy, and real life all at once," Lopez explained.
Hat maker Nick Fouquet said his surfboard is already in the car, ready to "jump in the water" as soon as the show is over. "Culturally, nothing compares to the ocean, the mountains, and everything we have to offer here. A show like this is a tribute to the strength of our city," Fouquet noted.
Sartori's collection also had many strengths. Like any summer Zegna collection, the presentation was dominated by luxurious linen pieces: striped suits, elegantly tailored shorts, trousers, and shirts. But there were also surprises, such as leather shirts, shorts, and oversized jackets. "The perforated leather jackets were incredible," explained stylist Dennis, whose clients include Tim Cook, Trammell Tillman, and Christopher Meloni. "I also couldn't take my eyes off the creamy yellow suit. I loved every look. I can't pick just one.".
Göransson also had a hard time choosing a favorite. "I definitely could have worn anything. But I really liked the green suit and monochrome pieces, like the navy suit and anything loose-fitting." The composer «Sinners »"It was much easier to describe the feeling of sitting front row on the Malibu pier, watching the parade of looks. "Only in L.A., right?" True. And, in a very L.A. way, VIP guests headed from Malibu to the Marmont bar in Hollywood for a post-show party that lasted late into the night.
