Scientists have long established a connection between dinosaurs and the various birds we see around us today. Archaeological exhibits confirming this fact are housed in museums around the world. However, if there is living proof of this lineage, it is one of the ugliest birds on planet Earth – the shoebill, also known as Balaeniceps rex. Shoebills are typically large birds (though not particularly fleshy) with plumage that combines blue-gray, dark gray, and slate hues. Shoebills are relatively quiet birds, capable of remaining silent for days at a time, save for the flapping of their wings. However, when they do make a sound, it is extremely loud. This is especially noticeable during the mating season, when the male attempts to attract a female during courtship. Repeated bursts of sound are created by clapping the upper and lower parts of the bill, reminiscent of a machine gun or a breeding drum. Their lives begin in a nest built by their parents, but they are then forced to abandon the nest at the tender age of just three months. After fledging, shoebill chicks are forced to forage for food on their own, guided by their parents. Despite their ferocity and aggressiveness, shoebills are endangered. According to the IUCN Red List, the current shoebill population is estimated at between 3,300 and 5,300 individuals. Their numbers are steadily declining due to human threats and frequent habitat loss.
