Movies «Behind the Scenes» and "Obsession" made a splash at the box office. Both horror films, produced on shoestring budgets by YouTube content creators, outsold all other new releases. Gen Zers flocked to see both films in droves, filling theaters across the country and breaking box office records.
The film "Behind the Scenes" topped the weekend box office.
Backrooms grossed an impressive $81.4 million from 3,442 theaters in North America, significantly surpassing initial projections that predicted a $40-$50 million debut (according to Box Office Mojo).
Directed by 20-year-old Kain Parsons, this psychological thriller is based on his viral web series. The film follows a furniture store owner (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who discovers a secret door leading to an endless labyrinth of unremarkable rooms. When he disappears, his therapist (Renate Reinswe) sets out to find him.
With a production budget of approximately $10 million, "Behind the Scenes" has already grossed $118 million worldwide. It earned $81.4 million in the US and $36.5 million overseas, making it one of the highest-grossing films of the year.
The film broke numerous records, such as the biggest opening weekend in A24 history, the biggest debut for an original horror film, and the best opening for a first-time director on a non-franchise film.
Thanks to positive reviews from audiences, Obsession became one of the most profitable films in history.
Since its debut, Obsession has continued to outperform other major releases. In its third weekend, this Focus Features hit grossed $26.4 million from 2,781 theaters. That's $101 million more than its second weekend, which, in turn, grew by $391 million compared to the $17 million it took in its first weekend. According to Focus Features, it's the first film since 1982's E.T. to increase its box office revenue in both its second and third weekends outside of the holiday season.
Whiplash has already surpassed $100 million domestically and reached $148 million worldwide, quickly approaching $150 million. It's the highest-grossing film in Focus Features history released in the US, with a budget of just $750,000 to $1 million (according to Box Office Mojo).
