Patrick Wilson as Tom Bowden

In the new film adaptation, Patrick Wilson plays Tom Bowden, a lawyer who works alongside his wife.

In the 1962 and 1991 versions, the character is named Sam Bowden, as in the novel. In the 1962 film adaptation, Sam was played by Gregory Peck, who was much more faithful to the source material. Peck, who also played the lawyer in the film that same year, «To Kill a Mockingbird» , makes a cameo appearance in the 1991 version.

In Scorsese's film, Nick Nolte plays Sam, reimagining the role of the defense attorney in the central case of convicted Max Cady. Instead of catching Max red-handed, which landed him in prison, Sam acts as Max's public defender, who deliberately sabotages the case.

Although Wilson's version had Bowden handling Cady's case, the actor was inspired by Nolte. "I love Nick Nolte. Honestly," Wilson recently told the publication Entertainment Weekly . "Actually, one of my favorite movies is «48 hours »».

«"He's so compelling on screen," Wilson added. "I've always admired his acting, and"» Cape Fear »" is no exception, because even if he plays a good guy, you can always tell from the way he talks that there are some demons lurking behind him.".

Amy Adams as Anna Bowden

In the Apple TV series, Amy Adams plays Anna Bowden, Tom's wife and fellow lawyer. The couple married after Tom settled Cady's case.

In the novel, the heroine, named Carol, has a different name in each version. In the 1962 film, she is named Peggy and is played by singer and actress Polly Bergen, whose later credits include the film "Cry-Baby"« (1990) and a memorable role in The Sopranos« . In the 1991 film, the character was renamed Lee and played by the great Jessica Lange.

Adams' Anna is a bit more like Nolte's Sam than Lee, though the actress told EW she "wasn't thinking about Nick Nolte per se" when preparing for the role.

«"Jessica Lange has this soft strength that I've always loved," Adams said of her predecessor. "There's something special about that, something about strength. But at the same time, there's something very open about the character, and so I wanted to find a balance between vulnerability and strength.".

Javier Bardem as Max Cady

And now we come to the main star: Max Cady. Javier Bardem plays criminal antagonist Max Cady, who is released from prison and immediately sets out to take revenge on Sam—and his family.

The film stars Robert Mitchum, best known for his villainous role in another classic film, «The Night of the Hunter» 1955. Mitchum joined Peck for a cameo role in the 1991 film adaptation.

In the film «Cape Fear» In 1991, Scorsese cast his frequent collaborator Robert De Niro as Max, resulting in one of the most gripping (and disturbing) performances of the actor's career. Bardem's version of Max in the 2026 series seems closer in tone to De Niro's version.

«"I've seen that movie many times," Bardem told EW. "As soon as I found out I was going to play Max Cady, the first thing that came to my mind was, 'Don't even try, Javier, to come close to what De Niro did in his iconic role.'".

Bardem booked a cinema for a private screening of the 1991 film. "Sitting in this dark room, I kind of asked De Niro for his blessing," he said. "I hope I'll at least remind myself how good [his] performance is.".

(A new character in the 2026 adaptation is the Bowdens' son, Zach, played by Joe Anders, the son of Kate Winslet and director Sam Mendes.)

In the 1962 film, Laurie Martin plays Nancy, the Bowdens' teenage daughter. Although «Cape Fear» was Martin's most famous film, at the time she was well known for her starring role in the NBC drama series «National Velvet» .

Juliette Lewis played Bowden's daughter, Danielle, in the film adaptation of the novel« Cape Fear» In 1991, Lewis was just 18 years old when she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance, which included a tense and controversial assault scene with De Niro.

Following the film's release, Lewis praised Scorsese's approach to depicting violence, stating Los Angeles Times "He doesn't let you look away because everything is shown so realistically. He makes you feel uneasy.".
