(KTLA) – When you think of Google "debugging" something, you probably picture software, not actual bugs. Yet the tech giant is seeking federal government permission to release up to 32 million mosquitoes in California and Florida as part of its "Debug" program.
The goal of this little-known program is to "stop the spread of harmful insects with beneficial ones" by releasing millions of sterile mosquitoes to kill those that carry diseases.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mosquitoes are the deadliest animals in the world. Of the more than 3,500 species of mosquitoes, only one species, Aedes aegypti , carries dengue fever, Zika virus and chikungunya, which affect hundreds of millions of people every year.
«"This is a complex problem," states the Google Debug project's homepage, which also explains that there are no effective vaccines or treatments for most mosquito-borne diseases. "Controlling mosquitoes with pesticides is unsustainable because they become less effective over time and can be toxic, [and] treating standing water is insufficient because people will never be able to find all mosquito breeding sites.".
«"We need a new approach," Google concludes.
So, what is this approach? Basically, mistakes—but "good" ones.
«"Beneficial insects are the same species of mosquitoes as harmful, disease-spreading mosquitoes. Our beneficial insects are male mosquitoes that carry the naturally occurring Wolbachia bacterium, preventing them from reproducing with wild female mosquitoes," the Google Debug page states. "Male mosquitoes cannot bite or spread diseases, so beneficial insects will prevent harmful mosquitoes from reproducing. Over time, the harmful mosquitoes will become increasingly rare.".

«"This technology uses naturally occurring bacteria, does not use chemicals, toxins, or genetic modification," continued the Google Debug scientists. "Similar approaches have been used for decades to safely control other pests. We are combining the scientific and engineering expertise of the Debug team with the help of international partners to breed and release a variety of beneficial insects and stop the spread of dangerous, disease-carrying mosquitoes.".
The scientists also said their approach differs from previous pest eradication projects in that they use data analysis, sensors and automation to "scale up the insect sterilization method.".
Debug's FAQ page states that program staff "actively collaborate with organizations such as national and local governments, community leaders, and research institutions" and spend time with members of the communities where they plan to conduct work before it begins so that scientists "understand local issues and considerations.".
A shooting near a memorial service in Watts left one person dead, two hospitalized, and a suspect is being sought.
As a result, Google is seeking federal approval to implement the project in both California and Florida.
A Federal Register notice states that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is reviewing Google's applications for an experimental use permit under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act and provides more details about the proposal, including that up to 16 million mosquitoes would be released in Florida in the first year of the project.
In the second year of the project, an additional 16 million mosquitoes will be released in California.
