In 1970, Blues Image hit the top of the charts with their song "Ride Captain Ride." Written Mike Pinera и Frank "Skip" Conte , this song is from the second album of the blues-rock band, Open, reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in July 1970.
Known for its electric keyboard riff, "Ride Captain Ride" was a fantasy composition about escaping to freedom. Pinera's wife, Valerie, told Songfacts that the song is entirely fictional, despite speculation that it is based on Sir Francis Drake's 1579 voyage along the west coast of America.
«"'Ride Captain' is a story born from his imagination," Pinera's wife shared. "I know that when he was recording this album in the studio, they needed one more song, and he wrote it on the fly. He came up with '73' using a keyboard with 73 keys.".
«"Ride Captain Ride" was Blues Image's only hit. By the time the song reached the top of the Billboard charts, the group had disbanded: Pinera joined Iron Butterfly, and Conte later moved on to Three Dog Night.

Piñera once admitted that he felt a lot of pressure trying to come up with a song because the band Blues Image ran out of studio time while recording the album. Open .
In an interview published by Classic Rock All Stars, Pinera recalls: "The producer came in and said, 'Do you have any more songs? Because if not, this is your last day in the studio. I've got 'Steppenwolf' and 'Three Dog Night' waiting in the wings.' I said, 'Oh, I have a song,' which actually didn't exist.".
Pinera explained that he locked himself in the bathroom and began to meditate.
«I quieted my mind and started hearing the music,„ he said. “I went out and sat down at the piano, a Rhodes Model No. 73, which had 73 keys. And I thought, „Okay, I need a first word.“ And the number 73 came to mind. I liked the rhythm, and I thought, »73 people sailed from San Francisco Bay…’ The song just kind of wrote itself.”.
Conte then came up with a melody for the chorus, and Blues Image recorded the song just in time.
Although Blues Image was short-lived, Piñera left with only the warmest memories of his four years with the band.
