Tom Holland has a busy summer ahead: Spider-Man: New Day and Spider-Man: Odyssey premiere within two weeks of each other. But to make both premieres happen, the actor had to convince Sony to push back the entire Spider-Man production schedule.
In a new interview with GQ, published Tuesday morning, Holland revealed that when director Christopher Nolan approached him about "Odyssey," the filming schedule clashed with "Brand New Day." Naturally, he couldn't turn down "Spider-Man," but he decided to personally call Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman to see if the schedule could be rescheduled.
«"I think one of the reasons Sony was happy with this move is that Chris has a reputation for always saying, 'This movie isn't going to take five months, and we're not going to lose Tom for two years,'" Holland said. "With any other director, the conversation might have been a little different.".
Indeed, Nolan kept everything under strict control, and filming of The Odyssey began on time and finished more than a week early.
«"I think given his experience at Marvel — and I think this will upset Marvel a little bit — his level of preparation is unmatched by anything I've ever seen," Holland added.
And according to the actor, the support of the Spider-Man: New Day project actually «saved» the film, because it helped improve the script and allowed Sony and Marvel to invite Destin Daniel Cretton as director.
«"He wouldn't have been ready to make the movie when we were," Holland said. "We wouldn't have had six months to develop the script with Destin and get it to where it is today. And I truly believe we created the best version of any Spider-Man movie. So while it was a bitter disappointment for Sony, I think, looking back, they're very grateful it happened.".
He also noted that he insisted that his fourth Spider-Man film had a real purpose and was genuinely good, not just a money-making endeavor, and working with Nolan helped him articulate that.
«"I was able to be very clear about my position and say, 'We're not going to come on set and figure everything out,'" Holland explained. "'We need to understand why we're making this movie, beyond the fact that it's Spider-Man 4 and they're going to make a ton of money and we're just going to have a big summer season.'".
The Odyssey film will be released in theaters on July 17, and Spider-Man: New Day will be released on July 31.
