Supergirl has unveiled the first official footage of an alien plucked straight from the Star Wars galaxy far, far away in action. Unlike Superman, where David Corenswet's titular Kryptonian remained on Earth, this year's Supergirl will see Millie Alcock's Kara Zor-El embark on a galactic adventure across the stars, where she'll face alien threats, including one whose skin tone has been altered from that of the DC Comics universe. In addition to the storyline from Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is being adapted by DC Studios, the sci-fi blockbuster appears to draw inspiration from franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars, which bring together disparate groups for perilous space adventures.
DC Film Studios has released a new promotional video for Supergirl through British cinema giant Odeon, featuring alien creatures and the unique worlds of the DCU blockbuster. One of the aliens featured in the latest Supergirl promo will be familiar to those who have closely followed the film's recent production and marketing (or who remember the 2017 Star Wars film, Episode VIII – The Last Jedi).
We're talking about a Star Wars alien who bears a striking resemblance to a mysterious lifeform from the DC Universe: Lexo Suger, who appeared in Episode VIII of The Last Jedi during scenes set in the Canto Bight casino. This hunched-over alien is a former assassin and a celebrity massage therapist at the Zord Spa and Bathhouse.
Comparisons between the anonymous alien from Supergirl and the celebrity massage therapist from The Last Jedi have arisen after a metal reproduction of a creature that clearly resembles the Star Wars galaxy inhabitant appeared in the official DC store.
In response to viral posts claiming Supergirl was "ripping off" Star Wars, DC took action, removing merchandise featuring the alien from the market a few days later and apparently never appearing again, as the "Across the Galaxy" metal plaque she was featured on is still missing.
Director Craig Gillespie hinted in an Odeon exclusive that Supergirl will visit the DCEU film «five planets» , where he will meet «"aliens from different places and with different languages." This Star Wars-style alien» — one of them, because after Ruthie fails to contact him in English, Alcock's Kara-Zor-El gets his attention with a loud, piercing scream.
It looks like Supergirl's new sidekick, Ruthie (Eva Ridley), will encounter an alien on what appears to be intergalactic public transportation. It's unclear whether the conflict will escalate into violence on the space bus, but Ruthie will be glad to have her Kryptonian companion by her side when it comes to confronting this massive alien.
Naturally, DC Studios hasn't commented on the similarities between this viral hunchback and Lexo Suger from The Last Jedi, so it remains to be seen whether this was an intentional reference or a funny coincidence.
