The couple's wedding took place just three months after the death of McComb's first husband and friend, Van Der Beek, at age 48 from colon cancer. McComb paid tribute to him and his "beautiful soul" in a touching Instagram post following his death, which included a photo taken on her 21st birthday.
«"This is how I will always see James—innocent, kind, and pure at heart," she wrote. "What a journey we've been through together over the years. I sit here with immense gratitude for the special bond, friendship, and love that James and I shared, and that has endured for decades.".
