ImGist - I Am the Essence

Max Verstappen explained why his daughter will not be in the Formula 1 paddock for now and shared his thoughts on parenting.

Four-time Formula One champion Max Verstappen has spoken about his first year as a father after he and partner Kelly Piquet welcomed daughter Lily in 2025.

Although he already had experience of being a father in the Piquet family, where he played the role of "adopted father", Verstappen spoke about what he learned in the first year of Lili's life.

«The most important thing for me is to always remain myself,» the Dutchman told the publication. The Telegraaf . "And, as far as I know, she is free to decide for herself what she will enjoy doing in the future.".

«"Many parents pressure their children and try to steer them in a certain direction, for example, when it comes to sports. This should absolutely not be done. I think it's possible to introduce a child to certain sports, but ultimately, they should choose what they want to do for themselves.".

Verstappen argued that playing sports is a healthy hobby for any child, but it is also important to show compassion and kindness to his family.

«"While playing sports is generally beneficial," he added, "it helps you stay healthy and avoid spending time outdoors. Then you're less likely to do something stupid. Also, I think it's important to be kind to your family. And sometimes stop and think about how not everyone will be around forever. And be compassionate, especially to those around you.".

The Red Bull driver grew up in a household where her father, former Formula One driver Jos Verstappen, spent much of her life in the spotlight and now aims to shield his daughter from the spotlight until she is old enough to decide for herself whether she wants the attention.

«"Of course, I'm working on that too," he explained, answering a question about whether he had any doubts about sharing photos of Lily on social media. "I don't want her in the photos right now. She'll have to decide later whether she wants that or not.".

«"That's why I don't want her in the pasture now. Firstly, because she won't remember it anyway, and secondly, for privacy reasons. A baby or a small child should lead a carefree life.".
