In an interview with PEOPLE magazine, Meryl Streep praised Laurie Metcalf's performance in Death of a Salesman. "I can't act," the Oscar winner said. She continued, "I don't know how to do it. I don't know how other people do it." She also discussed Metcalf's performance in the Broadway production and how she herself longed to retire.
«When I see other people doing it, I think, «How did she do that?» I just saw «Death of a Salesman» [on Broadway] last night. I can’t believe how Laurie Metcalf just blew me away… every single one of me! I thought, «Well, I better retire, because I don’t know how she did it. What an artist!»» Streep shared. The 76-year-old actress continued: «So yeah, I don’t know how to do it. To do everything without knowing how other people do it.».
She also explained, "And you kind of feel it, listen to it, and pick it up as you go. I don't have a method. But you have this feeling that you know what you need to do." Streep also recalled how she stayed in character while preparing for the first part of The Devil Wears Prada.
«"I was just miserable," Streep said. She added, "At first, I was hanging around the set, and then [in one scene] I tried to intimidate them. But they weren't having any luck, so I thought, 'Okay. I need to back off.'".
The "Mamma Mia!" star continued, "It was a really conscious decision. So I went back to my trailer, knitted a lot, and fumed. I don't know if it helped them, but it helped me." Metcalf also discussed her role in the Broadway production in a recent interview with PEOPLE magazine.
«"I didn't know what to expect from Linda Lohman," she said. The 70-year-old explained, "When I thought about the story, I never imagined her in this light—as the one who sets in motion the chain of events that leads to the ending.".
